I’m trying desperately for this not to become a rant or hatepost.
Nevertheless, I’m commenting on something here. A lot of people have been whining about Anakin’s cut-off hand being primitive compared to Luke’s in Episode 5. This is idiocy. This may be a personal taste, or the fact the Anakin might not have had access to grade-A medical facilities before he returned to Naboo.
In essence, do not confuse form with function, or Star Wars Braun Eletric Shavers/Phasors will look like the height of technology.
Or, heck, maybe it’s because something like 35 - 40 years passes between Anakin getting his hand replaced and Luke getting his done? Think there might have been a few advances in medical technology/techniques during that time? There WAS a war going on, after all …
This is a little silly. You see very little of the hand. For all we know, it might have all sorts of neato ginsu, rocket-booster attachments. The important things we are meant to see are that a) it’s there and b) it’s gold and…for lack of a better term…angelic looking.
When I saw it, I assumed that they simply weren’t done installing it yet. How long does it take to permanently attach a prosthetic limb? Maybe they just haven’t put the fleshy covering over it yet?
There were so many other things wrong with this movie. Why the hell do people latch onto this one thing? My complaint with this scene is that they didn’t cut off his head and replace it with the head of someone who can act.
Know what I don’t understand is why bother with the prosthetic limb in the first place? He got chopped with a lightsaber, and it looked like a pretty clean cut. Why not just reattach the severed arm? Surely they have that technology?!
From the looks of things, and the absolute lack of gallons of blood spurting from the stump (not to mention the fact that ObiWan’s lightsaber slashes didn’t bleed, nor did Luke Skywalker’s stump) it would appear the lightsabers cauterize the wounds they cause. Might make re-attachment a challenge - ergo, the mechanical prosthetics. I have a feeling that the hand will be more human-looking later (or maybe he’ll just put a black glove on over it…).
It strikes me that a weapon that cauterizes the wound is a pretty bad weapon. If I’m in a life-or-death fight with somebody and I manage to cut his arm off, I want him to bleed like a stuck pig.
Per Obi-Wan in Star Wars, they use the lightsaber b/c it’s “…a more elegant weapon…for a more civilized age.” Spattering blood doesn’t seem to fit that design…
Think about Obi-Wan in the Mos Eisley cantina. Or in the bar on Coruscant, in Ep. 2. He does a lot of amputating people’s arms. The Jedi probably settle a lot of small disputes like this and might try not to indiscriminately kill people when they can just incapacitate them.
Notice, though, that when Obi-Wan de-handed the dude in the Mos Eisley Cantina in Ep IV, there was blood on the severed hand that was still clutching the blaster.
I haven’t seen it in a long time, but I think I remember blood.
You’re right about that. If we want to play the “rationalize everything wrong with Star Wars” game (which can be fun) I’d say that that particular alien’s physiology makes cauterizing wounds difficult, but most other people/aliens’ wounds get cauterized.
What’s really starting to annoy me is the whole Typho clone army conspiracy theory. Where’s that tinfoil hat smilie when you need it?
Ok, Typho and the clones look similar. I can see that. Maybe they even look the same, but they are not the same actor. Look here to see. It makes no sense at all for there to be a clone army of Typhos. If Palpatine was gonna try some sneaky plan to have a clone of Typho kill Padme why the hell would he make an army of them? One or two would suffice. More would just draw attention. We have no reason to believe that Typho is better than Jango as a soldier. Having two armies doesn’t make sense.
The theories about Padme’s handmaiden being clones are even more ridiculous. They all look different.
Next thing I hear is gonna be how the Ewoks all look so similar, they must be an evil cloned army out to kill Luke and company.
Anyway, sorry for the hijack, I just had to get that off my chest.
