Why I'm not going anywhere, any time soon

If you go to the top of this page, right under the words “The Straight Dope”, you will find the phrase “Fighting ignorance since 1973(It’s taking longer than we thought)”

Every now and then I get caught up in outside activities and events, and I wonder if maybe I should take a break from helping out on this message board. Then I read something like this.

Ignorance is not just a burr under my saddle, it’s fucking dangerous.

I know what you mean. The writing in that article is horrible. Also, who in the hell goes on a man retreat and dances around with other men while “astral-tunnelling”. Hello!

What I want to know is, when this happened in October, 2004, why are they just now investigating it?

Which reminds me of this recent story.
There must be something about desert heat…

Astral-tunnelling? You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

They were obviously waiting to see if the guy really was astral traveling; after all, he might have come back.

I think our approach is all wrong. Instead of “fighting ignorance”, we should “fight ignorants”.

Death to the ignorants! Down with the dumbsia!

That is a different web site.

Right. Outside activities could kill you. You’re much safer at your computer, but turn on a fan.

It only goes to show you: if homeland security had made him take off his shoes and confiscated his swiss army knife before his ‘astral trip’, he’d be alive today.

Astral Travel, How may I help you?

Yes, I’m looking to book a trip to Venus.

Hmmmm, it looks like that’s all booked.

That’s okay, How about one of Jupiter’s moons?

Hmmmm, nope. That’s booked as well.

The fifth dimension?

Nope.

Nirvana?

Nope.

Kathmandu?

Nuh-uh.

Well, what DO you have available?

It looks like all we have right now is the Port Augusta morgue.

That sounds nice. I’ll take it.

Window or aisle?

BTW, thanks to the person who came up with “dumbsia” in the recent discussion, elsewhere on this board, about why revolutionary governments always seem to go after the intelligentsia. That neologism still makes me chuckle.

Along the same lines, I got on the Google this morning to see if I could figure out what is wrong with my toe (the throbbing pain in which awoke me in the middle of the night last night), and I came across this.

Site name didn’t seem too wacky – healthypages.net. I’m reading along in the thread and…WTF?! Treating a 2-y-o’s infected toenail with CRYSTALS?!

I hope the poor child doesn’t end up crippled or worse.

At lunch yesterday, I walk talking to one of the physical therapists who works here, and she was telling me about when she was a spectator at this. Specifically, the last paragraph. The guy’s helmet flew off before impact, and he was in real bad shape. The cops there didn’t do anything but radio for an ambulance, while my coworker was keeping him warm and trying to assess his injuries and trying to keep him from choking on his own blood. All this while annoyed cyclists are zooming by. She even had to yell at the cops to stop the race for a minute so the ambulance could get through.

Here’s the update on the coroner’s verdict.

Can anyone point to what happens in the US to parents who belong to something like Jehova’s Witness, who let a kid die? Is this similar?

Well, they were right. He certainly was detached from his physical being.

Did the Native Americans use fiberglass insulation?

And did they not think that there might be a difference between using a sweat lodge in cool, temperate North America and using one in IN THE DESERT IN AUSTRALIA?

If you mean refusing blood transfusions, in that case they know the child is sick but can’t accept treatment. Or Christian Scientists, who know something is wrong and believe prayer will cure it?

Here they didn’t seem to register that anything was wrong.

Parents can be charged with child endangerment if they don’t seek medical care for a critically ill child.
They can refuse blood for their child, but if it’s a choice between the blood and death, the hospital can get a court order. However, parents wishes are followed as far as possible.

I know, first hand, of at least one case of a neighbor dropping in on a family whose child was dying on their living room floor while they prayed over her. The neighbor called 911. The child was taken to ther ER. The parents were charged. Their other childrens were placed in foster care, as was the girl who eventually recovered.
