Why is 18 considered when you become an adult?

It seems so random. 13 or 20 should be the age.

Not random at all, maybe a bit arbitrary.

That is the age MOST graduate from High School.

Why is 18 “random” but 13 or 20 makes sense?!

during the Vietnam war there were complaints that 18 year olds could be drafted but couldn’t vote and the reasining was that you should be able to vote if you can be sent to war. Voting age changed from 21 to 18. Of course one is just as arbitrary as the other.

Allegedly, the frontal lobe matures in humans in their early 20s, and as the frontal lobe seems to be the part of the brain responsible for rational thinking, the age of maturity should maybe be raised by a few years.

In the US it’s even less simple, since we similarly have a range of different ages at which one is considered “adult” for various purposes, but almost all of those ages vary from state to state.

The US originally adopted 21 from British common law; it was supposedly derived from the age a squire was allowed to be a knight (note that it was not true across the board: King Richard II was crowned king at age 10).

Over the years, the various states have adjusted that for various reasons. The drinking age was usually 18 back in the 60s; it’s now 21 just about everywhere. Voting age went the other direction: from 21 to 18. The reasons for the age changes are complicated and often different in each state.

It would be better if the age was actually random.

It’s changed in modern times. It was common for boys and girls to leave school by the 5th or 6th grade. They were considered men and working full time by 15.

My granddad had a 7th grade education. He left home to work in the oil fields at 16. He was 20 when he married my 14 year old grandmother. She only had a 4th grade education. She left school to help raise her sisters. She had been running a household, cleaning and cooking for several years before marrying. This wasn’t unusual at all even in the 1920’s.

Treating someone like a kid until they are 18 is a very modern idea.

This might be better in IMHO.

Now there’s a phrase you don’t see every day!

Tradition, and we are too lazy to give every kid a “maturity” test. Hellfire, some of probably shouldn’t be considered reasonable adults even at age fifty.

I think that much of the debate was rather, that you can be *drafted *and sent to war, rather than just sent to war, without the right to vote.

Not outside Tennessee, at least.

More like, we don’t actually have a “maturity test” to give them in the first place.

Because in most places the younger ages have been shotgunned by the age of consent.

Details. The government could have cobbled up a “maturity test” if they felt the need, similar in the way that “intelligence tests” were used for years to exclude certain classes of immigrants.

Because 13 is the first teen age, and 20 is a solid decade number.
