Why is a reversed suspension being used as a reason for a permanent banning?

I’m sure it’s not.

Anyway, UltraVires wasn’t banned for being a conservative, he was banned for being a jerk.

^ And THAT needs to be the prime message here - he was banned for his conduct and not his content.

Honestly, @puzzlegal, I thought you a were going a different way after reading that first sentence. A bit disappointed by the second sentence. I thought it would read:

“But here, on SDMB, we are committed to standing up to the sort of microagressions people are accustomed to getting away with IRL, and so certain posters prone to engage in that sort of behavior off-board may find themselves in for a rude, but absolutely appropriate, awakening here.”

Really wish you’d have posted that. Because it would have been inspiring, even if only as an aspirational statement.

But I still respect you.

I also don’t see the point of the Pit where you can attack other posters. However, them’s the rules.

But one of the peachy features of Discourse is that you can put an entire sub-forum on Ignore. It doesn’t show up on the main page, you don’t see the latest trending nastiness, and you don’t get notifications from it. My SDMB experience has improved once I found that feature.

100%. I have P&E on ignore. I only end up in there on accident (usually if it’s linked to from elsewhere). It’s the real pit IMHO.

As a P&E moderator, I’m aware of this and am working to create more of a distinction between the two forums. It may take some time, but hopefully things are improving.

It would have been inspiring. But a little too aspirational for my style. We still have a LOT of microaggessions against pretty much every minority who posts here.

Is it possible the board just has a culture of microaggression in a very general and unspecific sense?

Only to the extent that microagressions are a feature of society at large.

I dunno - I think there’s probably something about the whole ‘fighting ignorance’ thing that might have a tendency to amplify that feature, or bring it to the surface more.

What about those of us who consider the “fighting ignorance” byline just a silly historic footnote best ignored as an irrelevancy?

What about them?

Are we playing “Questions only”?

Bueller?

Do you want to play a game?

Are you asking if my description of a slight tendency was actually an accusation of some sort of universal and extreme compulsion?

No. I’m asking what I asked.

I suppose those people are out of scope of the statement I made about fighting ignorance. It’s strange to me that this even requires confirmation.

Is there anything else related to the moderation that needs to be discussed here, or is this just turning into a Monty Python argument clinic over our “fighting ignorance” tag line?

They are not being forced to post on this message board.
