I saw the film ‘Bunny Lake is Missing’ (director - Otto Preminger, 1965) just once, on late night TV here in the UK, about 15 years ago. It was an extraordinary, atmospheric, witty, scary, haunting film in which even the most minor, walk-on parts were brilliantly written and acted. The cast included Carol Lynley, Noel Coward, and, I think, Laurence Olivier. Even the score was excellent.
It has never been on British TV since, as far as I know. It is not available in any video shops. Film societies never show it. I have had digital satellite TV installed for 2 years now and have never seen it on any of the myriad film channels.
Why? I’ve heard other people praise this film, so why are we not allowed to see it? I read somewhere that it had a ‘cult following’ - if so, where does the cult watch it? Is there some kind of rationing system for certain films? I just don’t get it.
I’m in the UK - is it shown in the US? Any ideas on how I could get hold of a video would be welcome.
I wish it wasn’t missing, I’ve heard that it’s one of the best movies out there never to have been released on video. I keep hoping that it will appear on cable as well. A touch of evil finally did, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’ll be on a “classics” movie channel at some point as well.
Is this the same movie that was on an episode of MST3K? Is this what you mean by finally appearing on cable? If that’s so, then is the above quote a knock of Bunny Lake is Missing?
