Why is Colibri a Moderator?
Well..with that logic, we could lobby to become a communist state. We’ll all share the wealth then. Marx would be sooo proud!
When my son was around 10 or 12 he said that communism didn’t seem like a bad thing, you didn’t have to work and you’d get what you needed anyway. I explained that people thinking like him are what make communist systems collapse, that if everyone acted that way there would be no goods to share. He said that if people like him caused the fall of communism, he should have received some kind of award or something.
I thought the design behind this website was to get to the TRUTH.
Yeah, but just wait till you see what it is. Run now. While there is still time.
Contrary, his statement addressed the degree of provocation and insulting I was appearently being.
Exactly. I made no remark on my opinions about the subject of the discussion, and I did not express any support for Balthisar’s position over yours. I warned you both, and warned you for basically the same thing.

You were unnecessarily confrontational from your very first post in that thread. In particular, statements such as this are not conducive to the kind of civil discussion we prefer to have in General Questions:
Are you KIDDING me!!??!?!?!?! I mean really. It’s people like this guy that clog our judicial system and plague law enforcement with idiotic, “I know the law” bulls**t.
You got worse as the thread proceeded. In my warning, I gave you a list of your posts that were not appropriate for General Questions. Unfortunately I did not see the thread before things got out of hand. If I had, I would have cautioned both you and Balthisar much earlier.

You are new here, and evidently unfamiliar with Board conventions and etiquette. I would advise you to take things down several notches if you post in GQ. You will find your arguments better received in any case if you state them civilly. But if you feel compelled to have a knock-down drag-out fight, take it to the Pit.
How can we do that when a mod supports the person who has a PAID subscription vs a guest who is on his trial period? Is it about the money?
I actually probably would have come down harder even on you if you had been a paying member, who is expected to know how things work around here. I gave you some benefit of the doubt because you are new, and don’t know the ropes. I also did take into consideration the fact that you were providing legitimate information in your posts, rather than merely stating your opinion.

You know, I ask myself that every day. And, really, the only thing that makes it all worthwhile is the groupies.
Yeah, Colibri should actually be some kind of Minor Deity, or His Benevolent Highness, or maybe a Person Of Interest. Moderator as a title just doesn’t do him justice.
Thanks, but I am actually a Major Deity, Huitzilopochtli to be precise.
So…you my friend, located in PANAMA, chastise me for blasting a person who is part of the problem and not part of the solution that is occuring in middle AMERICA. Why? What insight do you provide?
Well, he certainly provided you with the opportunity to learn from your mistakes.

Most of the over-the-top emotional remarks that you made in just about every single post of yours in that thread would have been out of line in Great Debates. In General Questions, they were egregiously excessive.

Regardless of your personal passions, GQ is the place to post genuine information, not emotional rants wrapped around the odd nugget of fact.

Here is your opening line from your first post in that thread

It is entirely possible that everything you posted following that statement in regards to the law is factually correct. However, your opening volley was a direct, personal attack on another poster and the rest of your posts went downhill from there.

Had you left that opening sentence out of the post, it would have been a nearly perfect GQ post. The editorializing, even if accurate, did not really belong in GQ and by insisting on attacking another poster, you turned it into a Pit rant.

Now, has your extensive legal training permitted you the opportunity to read and understand what first Colibri and now I have posted? Or do you need a further explanation?

You’ve got groupies?

Heck, I can’t even get hangers-on or sycophants.

How much did you have to pay TubaDiva to be allowed groupies? (I’ve got to see whether I can afford that.)

They say if you’re not a communist by 20 you have no heart and if you’re not a capitalist by 30 you have no brains.

Hey jimmycat. How old are you ?

I stand corrected. My apologies. :smack:

It is a very soft spot for me.

I don’t know, my groupies aren’t that great. Always playing hard to get, pretending they don’t know who I am. Even just chasing one of them down to give them an autograph can be a real hassle, what with all the yelling and the pepper spray.

No, I’ve gotta say the groupies have been a bit of a let down, so far.

jimmycat, I don’t know if you’ve read these already, but here are a couple of links regarding posting here:

FAQ - Rules for Posting at the Straight Dope Message Boards

FAQ - Guidelines and Etiquette on the SDMB

The first line of the “Guidelines and Etiquette” post:

Why is Colibri a Moderator?

Because anyone else would be worse?

Did I win?

Ironically, a lot of discussion in that thread that didn’t involve jimmy’s hijack was about how a calm, reasoned approach to a confrontation can be better than trying to emotionally or violently make a point just for the principal of the thing.

There are three of them: Huitzilopochtli, Duitzilopochtli and Luitzilopochtli.

Thank you. That was what my whole point was from the beginning.
