Don’t just send the empty envelope – put all the stuff they sent you, include the original envelope, in the business reply one and ship it back. I do that with all my junk mail – usually writing “REMOVE FROM MAILING LIST” in red magic marker on the form. It works pretty well. Moved to a new address last summer and the volume of junk mail has significantly decreased.
A few months ago, got a letter from Dubya thanking me for all my hard work with my local Republican party, too. Buh? It included a very nice signed picture of George and Laura.
I think it’s just your usual shotgun junkmail/spam technique. The Bush-haters wouldn’t be swayed by anything he wrote to us, but if something like this lands in the mailbox of someone who did make some kind of small contribution of money or labor somewhere along the line, the might be disproportionately gratified by it. The effort of gathering the names of all the people who’ve done some little thing is probably greater than just sending letters out to every Tom, Dick and Harry.
