Why is it taking them so long to catch the Moncton shooter?

For those that aren’t aware, there has been an ongoing manhunt for an armed and very dangerous man in Moncton, New Brunswick over the last 24+ hours. He’s killed three RCMP officers and injured two so far, and it appears they’ve narrowed down the area he’s in, but despite a few sightings, they haven’t captured him yet. The town is on lock down - schools, government buildings, etc., are closed, buses are off the streets, people in the search area are locked in their houses (and have been for a day now). The coverage is heartbreaking, including this press conference by Moncton RCMP Const. Therioult breaking down when confirming the deaths, and these videos taken by a homeowner witnessing the killing of one of the officers.

I am not judging the actions taken by the RCMP and other professionals in Moncton as I’m sure they are doing all they can, but was wondering if there was any speculation on what might be causing this manhunt to take so long to close.

My heart breaks for everyone in Moncton. I hope for a quick resolution and capture of this guy, and that no one else is hurt.

Purely pulling thoughts out of my ass (as is anyone answering at this point), but he was not previously known to police, so they have to track down useful contacts from scratch. If he is intelligent (seems to me that is an unusual trait for that sort of person, but maybe he is the exception) he could have had a cache of clothes and a razor and made himself look sufficiently different in a hurry that a member of the public wouldn’t immediately go “Holy Shit! That’s the bad guy!”. I think (still pulling thoughts out of my ass) that he still wants to go out in a blaze of glory but according to his terms and timing.

I think he’ll get many times the Recommended Daily Allowance of lead before he ever makes it inside a police station.

Yeah, I agree he’ll likely not make it to trial.

Interesting point that he may have planted a disguise - he does seem smart and well prepared, so perhaps something like that did occur.

He’s the most annoying dick in Canada. He gives other Canadians a bad name.

he is wearing camo.

I’m surprised that so much of the lockdown area is developed. I’m wondering how much he can possibly hide. (But then, with all this time passing, the answer seems to be “surprisingly well.”)

It took a few days to track down the LA cop shooter. He had traveled into a more undeveloped area when they caught up with him.

Were those Mounties that got shot? I know their families are hurting right now.

It’s just a terrible and vile attack.

The guy is very well armed and wants to kill police. Plus these cops only see a murder every other year or so. Containment is probably the best policy.

There are lots of wooded areas and paths that can be used to sneak around into different areas not to mention sheds and campers and such to hide in. Police have been patrolling all day with cars, planes and helicopters. Hope they catch him soon as lockdown is very boring.

The Mounties have their para military units just like US law enforcement.

I’d hate having this guy looking for me. They’ll get this crazy shooter.

…with all due respect, the answer is quite simple. Real life isn’t a freaking TV show. It isn’t going to be all wrapped up in 42 minutes + commercials. Can you explain why you think this should have been over and done with in a hurry?

He has been caught, but no further details:
