After him changing the whole Han shot first thing, I have no faith in the man.
I think he’s waiting so he can release episodes 1-6 in a super duper uber set with more added/reworked/changed crap that’s just going to piss me off some more.
He’ll release all three of them, modified from the originals, in a box set that will cost about $75.
He’ll release all the DVD extra’s in another box set that will cost another $75.
After all the complaining dies down (but the fans will still buy), he’ll re-release them again, but this time he’ll release “the Original version” box set. Another $75.
If you want voice-over commentary, that will come on a cassette ($15), and you’ll have to cue it up yourself.
The above are predictions, based upon projections of how his continued lack of respect for his fans will increase over the next 5 years.
Except that he’s already said that as far as he’s concerned, the “Special Editions” are the only versions, and he will NOT release the original versions. Of course, Lucas says a LOT of things that turn out to only be true “from a certain point of view”.
That’s the worst part of it. Not only do we have to wait, we have to wait for demonstrably inferior versions.
Lucas has reportedly been shooting new scenes to insert into the original trilogy…to make them jibe up better with his shitty new trilogy, I suppose.
The only person he’s hurting by delaying the release is himself. Pirates are having a field day with Star Wars, and good-quality DVD bootlegs of them are all over the Net.
There’s also the possibility he’s just trying to keep some buzz going by withholding them, considering his new SW movies are attracting less and less interest with each entry.
Well, yes Lego, he did say that. But… somebody will then tell Lucas in a few years - “Hey, you can pocket another $75 mil if you re-release the originals as they came out. Call it ‘Classic SW’ or something and release them in too-small quantities.”
And then we’ll get the film strips that show stills accompanied by a cassette recorded narration. You have to advance the image by hand when you hear the “boop!”…
Originally, he wasn’t even going to put 1-3 on DVD until after the realease of 3. He drug his feet, claiming he was too busy to do the DVD of 1 the way he wanted to do it, with all the bells and whistles, while still keeping 2-3 on schedule. His firm stance was that until he could release all 6 on DVD, he wasn’t going to release any. However, pressure from the studio execs (who were rightfully alarmed over losses to their bottom line from the bootlegs) made him change his mind.
I enjoyed the re-worked episodes 4-6. They were made much better.
But I think anything else done to them will only screw them up.
He should quite while he’s ahead on that.
And he should quit directing, for sure. Let someone else do episode 3, please!
I couldn’t stand, by the way, the special features disk with episode 2 where every single staff member had to kiss George’s ass at every turn. It was sickening.
I am lookingorroward to one day owning a box set with episodes 4-6. I would love to see the trailers I saw as a kid in the 70’s and be able to have something that lasts longer than VHS.
Yes, I’ll buy the box set someday.:smack:
And so will many of you.
Not me. Not only do I not want the redone ones but neither do my kids, who grew up watching the original videos. I’ve replaced the videos since but I found the original releases used on eBay.
We watched the bastardized SW when it was on TV several months back. Well, we started to. When they got to Greedo shooting first, my son turned it off and popped in the video tape.
I have the original versions. Proudly bought back, when, the early 90s? You know - the ones where they changed the covers from the original movie poster artwork to the heads of Darth Vader, Yoda, and a storm trooper? Yep - those. I’ve got 'em, and I’m proud. I will never buy the restored version, even if they’re on DVD - I’ll go get one of them handy dandy pirated orginal version DVDs I’ve heard about (thanks, Keith!)
My mother’s got an ESB BETA tape with the original poster artwork on the cover - that’s from 1987 or so.
