Exactly!
Utter, utter bullshit. My posts on the issue are detached, analytical and common sense explanations to show that anal rape was not and could not have been what McQueary saw. If you or Miller or anyone else honestly believes those posts are ‘loving descriptions of child molestation,’ then I’d suggest you and they get a lot less het up over child molestation, 'cause they ain’t no such thing!
Come on, Rev, you’re a sensible guy. What’s wrong with taking a good common sense look at whether or not an alleged crime could in fact have been perpetrated?
Do really favor turning a blind eye to potential facts when it comes to criminal allegations in favor of assuming the worst based simply upon superficial appearances? For the police and attorneys that may be involved, an examination of creepy details is de riguer in any alleged sex crime.
Why should it be any different on this message board which places value on fighting ignorance? Should the board’s motto be “Fighting ignorance since 1973 except for when the facts are uncomfortable, in which case we’re fine with holding on to ignorance for dear life.”
I think not…and that’s why I’ve been posting what I have.
I think Miller should be reprimanded for insulting a poster with his mod hat on and SA should banned for being a one trick pony. And that pony is a little boy. And he’s riding it.
In that case posters should be allowed to respond in kind.
Interestingly (perhaps), I actually agree with you here. I also think you should be able to say ‘motherfucker’, at least in The Pit. Mind, I can see why they have the rules on these things they do, but I think that, at least in the Pit, you SHOULD be able to reply in kind.
Of course, you COULD start a Pit thread about it, though I don’t recommend that, as I can almost (well, nix the qualifier) guarantee that it wouldn’t turn out well.
It didn’t look that way to me, and I seriously doubt you are going to be banned, unless you have a ton of warnings accumulating. They don’t ban people simply because they are unliked on this board by a large number of posters…you have to violate board rules to get banned. Look at the freaking Gonz, or FXM (who I think is actually still a member at this point). If you DO have tons of warnings (you can check in User CP) then I’d suggest laying low or watching the insults, as that’s the most likely thing to actually get you banned.

So you are actually saying there is no such thing as child molestation!?
I think there is some pretty incredible revisionism going on in your description of what occurred.
The thread at issue was started by Malleus, Incus, Stapes–one of the board’s most innocuous and inoffensive poster–and one who has discussed having conflicts of sexuality of her own (she has identified herself as asexual in the past). So the remarks about how this person was her “platonic soulmate” and that they shared secrets about “sorta-lesbianism” should have awakened the sensitivities of anyone who has been paying the least bit of attention. MIS shared that this person had not been entirely forthcoming about the pretty significant issues of gender dysphoria and sex-reassignment surgery. Completely understandably, MIS felt that maybe the feelings she thought were there weren’t.
And what “It Gets Better” pep talk did ever-classy Miller give the OP in one of the very first responses?
Jesus. Get the fuck over yourself, OP.
Good heavens! It wasn’t a “It Gets Better” at all, he was just a prick, doing for the lulz on the internet!
CarnalK quite appropriately called him out on this shitty assholism. To which Miller articulated the rule that you can’t tell someone to go fuck themselves, just that they should do the altogether different thing of getting the fuck over themselves. And moreover, if you’re smart, you’d certainly never say these things to a moderator. Even if the moderator himself certainly felt no need for such restraint.
So, yeah, I’d say that was some right shitty moderation there. And indulging in the gratuitous hostily (to both CarnalK and MIS, who certainly did not deserve such treatment) and defensiveness that always betokens a burnt-out mod in need of retirement. (See, e.g., Czarcasm.)

Nah, I’m more miffed at Miller for taking advantage of his moderatorly protections to make accusations I’m not allowed to respond to, for bald-facedly lying about my PMs, and refusing to discipline a poster for baiting me by raising a subject that I and everyone else had been forbidden to mention. A man of good character does not do those kinds of things, and according to board rules this is the place to raise those objections.

In retrospect and based on what other posters have said, I suppose he actually may have been trying to be humorous by mocking the rules he signed up to enforce, but that wouldn’t have occurred to me at the time.
I have no warnings that I know of (where in User CP would I check?), still, I would imagine a banning could be for a first offense if the poster is unpopular enough and the mod has it in for him enough. I could be wrong of course, but then that’s the problem when you have a moderator inappropriately moderating a moderator he has it in for. Had he been conducting himself in the same way with me that he does with everybody else I likely wouldn’t have felt that way.
So you are actually saying there is no such thing as child molestation!?
Don’t be stupid.

Subjective impressions of my character aside, you seem to be somewhat confused over what the rules are in the Pit. There is a list of specific terms that are not allowed to be used against other posters. The list does not forbid the use of the term “fuck” altogether, but does restrict certain formulations of it, including “fuck off.” CarnalK was and is free to insult me in using as many intemperate terms as he cares, provided they don’t appear on that specific list (and don’t violate certain other rules, such as wishing death on other posters, or using hate speech). For that matter, so are you. So is Starving Artist.
Note, also, that I did not write that list, nor did I have any hand in its creation. I just enforce it.
And, of course, my comments to the OP of that thread were made as a poster, not a moderator.
I do want to thank you, however, for putting me in the delightful position of being lectured, by you, over being unnecessarily hostile in a pit thread. That really made my day, right there.

You are free to respond to the insults in that mod note in whatever manner you see fit, provided, of course, that you observe the standard rules of behavior for the Pit. Since you would not be insulting me over my actions as a moderator (which, in that thread, were nothing more than me telling people that you were not breaking the rules), I would not view that as a violation of the rule against insulting a moderator for decisions made in his official capacity as a moderator.
I have no warnings that I know of (where in User CP would I check?)
If you have any warnings, a tab labelled (IIRC) Infractions will appear on your User CP, listing all warnings you’ve received. If you do not have any warnings, the tab is not visible.
Note that we only instituted that system a few years back, so warnings predating the adoption of the automated system do not appear there. But at this point, those warnings will be so old they won’t figure very heavily in any determination of your behavior we might make going forward.
I appreciate the information.
Actually, if you go into User CP you’ll see, just below User Notifications and New Subscribed Threads: a section called Latest Infractions Received, assuming you HAVE such infractions. If you don’t see that section you don’t have any. Sadly, I do have several, so I’m probably closer to being banned than you are, SA, assuming you don’t have such a section.

Woo-hoo! All my infractions are pre-implementation.
I don’t see “User Notifications” or “New Subscribed Threads” either. I guess those options also don’t appear either if you don’t have any.
Same here, on all counts.
Thanks for the info, xtisme.

Maybe you have to be a member to see those things?

Well, that blows that theory out of the water, if you aren’t seeing them either (since you are a Charter Member). That’s what I see when I click on my User CP though. No worries about the info.

The “chopping to new depths” line was pretty damn funny, and within the last month or so 2nd only to Bryan Ekers “resting your head on science’s shoulder” line.

I know I’m in the minority, but I wish such notes were MORE common. I want to see a return to the days of Coldfire and “I *am *the fucking hall monitor”. If someone gets offended by an insult in the Pit, I honestly think they need to find a new message board.
I agree entirely. Cleverly vicious (or viciously clever) comments are an honored tradition of SDMB moderators.

Meh, you’re too likeable to have a chance. You’d be lucky if you tied fluiddruid.
It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.

…And you people do NOT want me as a mod. You’d lose your most cherished dishonest debating practices. No more lying about or miscaracterizing what other posters have said (why is this allowed anyway, given the stringent rule about changing quotes? I may have to start a thread here about it), no more flat out lying about what other posters have said, and no more bogus cite demands…
So your first official action would be to ban yourself.
