Why is my cat peeing all over the place?

My cat used to pee on the rug in the bathroom only when I went out of town for a while (she would get mad). Recently though she’s been doing it every day. I tried closing the door but then she pees on the rug in my bedroom. I tried a watergun, but then she still does it when I’m not looking.

Her litter box is clean and she has plenty of food and water. Why is she doing this all of a sudden?

Oh, and she’s not a kitten, she’s seven years old.

Have you thoroughly washed the rug and washed the area with Pine Sol? There may be lingering cat urine scent there, so kitty thinks its ok to use this area as a toilet.

Otherwise, it could also be illness, possibly kidney ailment; in which case I’d take kitty to the vet.

She could have some urinary tract infection or crystals (I think that’s how it’s spelt). It might be worth checking with a local vet.

I forgot to mention out cat had crystals and urninated everywhere too, now he’s on medication and as no problems at all.

out=out

She does have the crystal problem but is on special food to help with that and so does not have any at this time. If she isn’t having a medical problem there is nothing that the vet can do, so I am turning to other cat owners for help. Help.

This site has a really good take on this.

My hubby’s cat gets angry at us and will pee on the dirty clothes (for a variety of reasons). When I first moved in, she pee’d in my shoes. I was intruding and she was letting me know she didn’t like it.

If the cat has a history of urinary crystals (I wish people would just use a decent food from the beginning) you should check with your vet.

ABSOLUTLY! That “special food” may not be working. You might also consider getting a second opinion from another vet. Could have turned into a bladder infection. Get him to a vet! Good luck!

Perhaps you should be on the lookout for other symptoms as well. My cat did this off an on for over a year and eventually we learned she had a brain tumour. This is a very rare possibility, but we didn’t notice the mild seizures, panting for a short period of time, confusion, walking in circles etc. I don’t want to scare you, but since cleaning up is such a maddening chore, it is easy to look at it as the problem rather than the symptom. Best wishes to you and your kitty. I hope you find a solution soon.

Her “special food” is actually a prescription formula that she has been on since her first vet appt. Trust me this cat is well taken care off.

I moved her food into the kitchen and took the lid off of her litter box. I also called the vet but she had left for the day so I will talk to her tomorrow.

We had food for our cat just as you decribe and our cat still got crystals again. Now he’s on pills. Do look into in.

Thank you so much for the advice. I will consult my vet about something more effective. Hopefully my spaz of a cat will take pills  she is a calico, and they are naturally weird, even for cats

Female cats will sometimes pee around the house if they aren’t spayed. Don’t ask me how I know this.
If your cat isn’t spayed, a trip to the vet is in order.

Jenyphr,

Is there only one cat in the house? If there are others, are there any boys in the group? Finally, how long have you lived there?

B

She’s been spayed for at least six years now. She’s the only cat… actually only pet in the apartment and she’s been there for about a year now.

She’s a bit weird, even for a cat. She freaks out over most noises and takes a while before she warms up to any one. I think it took her about three weeks before she’d come out when I was visiting. But normally she just runs under the bed if any of these things happen.

I know way too much about my neighbor’s cat. This is kinda creepy.

Interesting. See, we have a problem cat, but she’s in a 4-cat household (2 boys, 2 girls). I had to get pretty far into her head to keep from having to give her to a friend – and the really weird thing is we thought about giving her away because we knew how traumatic things must have been for her, not 'cause of the carpet.

She started on our bath mats and got worse over time. <shudder> I’m apparently allergic to “un-litterboxed” cat piss, just discovered.

Two things I strongly recommend:

  1. Get “Nature’s Miracle” for cats. It’s a spray to put directly on the pee spots. It really works!
  2. The reasons I know it works. I put some cat pee under a slide and watched it literally “break up” due to (likely) enzymatic action. Watching it through a stained slide proved the removal of the organic compounds and the netralizing of the color to the stain – as I watched. The other reason is the black light itself. Get a fluorescent black light. It’s really creepy. You may discover old pet stains from a previous tenant! My wife and I found our home meticulously cleaned when we were first moving in. Except for the strange, drippy, then oddly circular stain on the carpet. And all that time I’d thought the previous occupant had been gay??
  3. My final product endorsement (I should have an infomercial): Dr. Helsey’s Cat Attract cat litter. It’s actually pretty dang good at keeping the box full. (I have another, really long story about how I know it’s her in the box and separately, how I discovered her urination in the first place). Costs a bit more, but lasts twice as long.

Anyhow, use the black light with the Nature’s Miracle and you’ll be really happy with the results. You will be able to see which stains are new and which have been neutralized.

I hope any of this helps.

Here’s another site dealing with this problem.

It includes not only both medical and behavioral causes, but a few methods of dealing with it as well, including a feline hormone spray.
