Why is my iMessage setting getting turned off?

Not sure if this is an iOS issue or a Wi-Fi issue …

I work in a small retail store with an unsecured guest Wi-Fi that we employees use as well as customers. There are 2 other networked that are solely for store operations and are locked down. Up until recently I’ve had no issues, but suddenly my iMessage keeps getting turned off, and it appears to only happen in the store. The major reason it’s a problem is that my boss and I text fairly frequently about work things, and since she’s also on an Apple product I don’t get her texts if I don’t have iMessage enabled.

The guest Wi-Fi is probably part of the issue I think? I can get messages running again if I turn off Wi-Fi and reset it on LTE. It all comes back with no problem. I don’t know though if I should just wait for the next iOS update and hope it fixes it, or mention it to the company IT.

Anyone recognize this problem?

What happens if you stay off the guest network?

I don’t really know. I haven’t tried because I’m there 8 hrs a day and generally I run the music for the store through my phone. I’d rather do that on free Wi-Fi.

Well, it’s possible that the guest WiFi is blocking some ports needed for iMessage.

Does the Messages app literally turn itself off? Like if you go to Settings > Messages > iMessage, is the “iMessage” toggle turned off (so it’s not green?).

Yep.

If I turn it back on while I’m on store wifi it won’t load, just the spinning circle of death. If I turn the wifi off, turn iMessage on it loads fine. Then I turn the wifi back on and I’m good for the day. It’s really odd. And irritating.

I need to be on the store wifi to clock in and out too.

I might shoot IT a message today and see what they have to say.
