Sometimes I feel so lucky. I get fix other peoples computers. Like this one tht I am usingright now. Halfthe keysdon’t workproperly, thespace bar beingthe most obvious (not to mentionit is a P3 650 with 128MB of RAM, runningXP). The user ofthis computer likes to use Outlook ashis mail client andfor whatever reason- Outlook is looking for an Exchange Server. This is onlypart ofthe problem this Outlook is having. I shouldpoint out that Ican’t get into the Options tab under Tools - it is greyed out - orI would have changedteh connection type(or whatever it’s called) to internet based rather than Corp or Workgroup.
The other thing that Ithink is related is that Outlook says that it can’t access the *.ost file untilit has talked to the Exchange server. Is it only looking for the ost because it thinks that Outlook isoffline (from exchange)? Also, there is no pst file. Actually, there is the old pst file that Ijust imported, but Outlook didn’t create one.
Lastly, there is an issue with Macfee AV that wasn’t uninstalled properly and Outlook says it can;t start a DLL that iis still there. Macfee can’t be removed by add/remove programs.
Any suggestions about how to get Outlook back as a POP3 email client would be great. Please don’t suggest Thunderbird as the Calendar part of Outlook is too imortant to give up.
If it’s looking for an Exchange server, it’s because there’s a mail account set up in that Outlook which accesses Exchange.
I’m not sure which version of Outlook you have, but if it’s either 2002 (XP) or 2003, follow these steps:
1.) Close Outlook.
2.) Click on the Start button
3.) Click on Settings
4.) Open your Control Panel folder
5.) Open up the Mail control panel.
6.) When the Mail control panel opens up, click on “E-Mail Accounts”
7.) Choose “View or change existing e-mail accounts” and click “Next”
8.) Find the mail account that has “Exchange” listed under the “Type” column and delete it. Save your changes and exit.
To add a POP3 account, follow steps 1-6 and choose “Add a new e-mail account” and follow the prompts.
That is where that bastard was. I was trying to find that screen and was looking in the wrong places. Ican now creat the internet email account. Thanks. Can I delete the exchange thing with no worries?
Sure, as long as you don’t really have an Exchange account. Should you open Outlook without any accounts specified (i.e., you delete the Exchange account and don’t create a POP3 account, thereby leaving no accounts), you’ll just be prompted to create an account.
I would create a backup of the mail file before deleting the thing. Once upon a time switching from Exchange to POP meant that you could lose mail, but they might have improved. You might want to consult with Microsoft Knowledge Base.
As for McAfee, it sounds as there are still parts of the program on the computer. You need to identify and manually remove those files. McAfees homepage should have a step by step instruction. It’s pretty common that AV programs want uninstall properly
There never was an exchange account on the machine. The harddrive had just been replaced by CompUSA and I guess there was some sort of SNAFU when it was configured.
I was afraid to just delete the leftover Macfee folder, but I will check out the website and see what they say.
