Why is the cheese on the cool side in the McDLT

As I recall, this was still from the era where most fast food burgers were pre-made and sitting, boxed, for what could be quite a while before being purchased. My recollection of cheese on burgers from that era was that having it “fresh” on the cold side was probably a benefit.

That’s a good point. I hadn’t thought of that.

Big Mac, McDLT, a Quarter Pounder with some cheese, Filet o’ Fish, a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a happy meal. McNuggets, tasty golden french fries, regular or larger sizes, salads chef or garden or a chicken salad oriental. big big breakfast, Egg McMuffin, hot hot cakes, and sausage. Maybe biscuits bacon egg and cheese, a sausage, danish, hash browns too. And for dessert hot apple pies, and sundaes three varieties, a soft serve cone 3 kinds of shakes and chocolatey chip cookies. And to drink a Coca Cola, diet Coke, and orange drink a Sprite and coffee, decaf too, A lowfat milk, also an orange juice. I love McDonalds good time great taste I get it all at one place

I still maintain the McDLT got an indirect shout-out in Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World”
‘Got styrofoam boxes for the ozone layer’
IIRC, one of the main complaints at the time about the McDLT was the use of “excessive” styrofoam packaging…ah yes, wiki comes thru as usual:

Dude, how did you get to the 80s? I need to go back and fix some things.

McD’s in general was getting much grief about the styrofoam boxes used for most of its sandwiches in that era (and switched away from styrofoam in general at about that time); the McDLT just was, as you note, a particularly egregious example.

Speaking of fast-food from yesteryear; remember when Wendy’s had the buffet?

Melted cheese belongs on nachos and pizza, not burgers.

Plus, if they melt it on the burger, then I can’t put the catsup, bbq sauce, A1, whatever I feel like adding between the cheese and burger patty so it doesn’t soak up into the bun and become useless.

Invest in Microsoft, PSXer. Split the profits with me when you get here.

And yet, that didn’t stop them from selling hotcakes and other breakfast combos.

Totally not the same kind of cheese, dude. Besides, bread that’s sopped up some barbecue sauce isn’t “useless” … it’s tasty.

I miss the days when every fast food place had a salad bar. Now you usually have to go to a place specializing in salad bar buffets to make your own salad. Only a few places, like Pizza Hut and Ruby Tuesday, still have a salad bar.

Forget the McDLT. Just don’t ever take away my Hula Burger.

Reading this thread, I’m really craving the Old Time Star burger from Carl’s Jr.

Weirdo.
