Why Is This Cat Staring At Me

Last summer a cat moved in from somewhere. I live in a garden (aka basement) apartment. In the summer, I would be up late and about 1am the cat would look at me. And meow.

I reckon it hadn’t gotten used to it’s own flat. I would go to the screen and say hello to the cat and say “Go Home Wrong Apartment.” And eventually it would leave.

I never fed it or even touched it as, we were on opposite sides of the screen.

I haven’t seen the cat since last October.

Now that the weather is nice, Mr or Ms cat is back. The funny thing is now it always shows up at my window around 10pm and sits outside staring at me. As soon as I wave to it.

It looks behind itself and leave. But unless I wave to it , it’ll sit there staring at me.

The cat is furry and fit and looks well fed. It has a collar so it must belong to someone.

Once it sat there for nearly an hour, but as soon as I waved to it. It left. It must know where it’s home is by now. And since I never fed it, what does this cat want?

It’s been every single day between 10 and 10:30pm now every day in March.

It’s working up the courage to ask you if you’d like to have a cup of coffee sometime. Be bold, make the first move!

You move like prey.

He’s just digging the groove, baby.

Do you smell like tuna?

I’m afraid we can’t answer your question until you post a picture.

It wants to swallow your soul. Sheesh, don’t you know anything about cats?

Potential food source ?

As I have a few cats they always stop by to see what’s cookin as it were.

Well, since all of the funny answers that I could come up with have been taken, I’ll try something that I notice with my cats.

You have established a Routine. Cats, being obsessive-compulsive creatures, operate solely within the confines of that routine. (Or at least mine do. I got them from my mother, so they may be just all screwed up.)

What Sean said, it’s a routine for the cat. After you finally wave he probably has a full day planned of sleeping, eating, licking his butt and chasing things. If you’d just wave sooner he could get an earlier start on all that.
Either that or it’s a game for him. “How long will I have to stare at the man before he finally waves, gvies me food or goes crazy?”

It’s a ghost and it’s haunting you.

Cats have an odd intrest in peering through grates/grilles, screens at moving objects. It fascinates them.

Yep, bet it’s just part of his routine.

What’ll I do today? Hmmm. I guess the same as every other day. Take a walk outside, smell stuff, eat stuff, go stare at that guy till he waves, which is my cue to go home.

My cat has a routine too. First thing in the morning, I get up, come out into the living room. She is curled up sleeping on my spot on the couch. I say “Hi, Miss!” she lifts her head sleepily and responds with a “Mmmh!”. She gets up, drinks and eats while I get dressed, then stands in the hall and stares at me when I leave. God knows what she does while I’m at work. When I come home, I hear the jingling of her tags before I even get in the door. When I open it, she’s in the hall, staring at me. I say “Hi, Miss!” again, and she looks away and immediately goes over to the couch and sharpens her claws on the side. I say, “No, no,” she stops, then looks up at me and says “Meeeeah!” Most things she does after that is random. Whenever I play my PS2 though, she always has to sit on my lap and watch. As soon as I turn the console on, she comes running.

It sees the Death Glow around your head and is fascinated by it.

Your ways fascinate me, but the knowledge of observation causes you to behave differently, which I find unappealing.

Signed,

The Cat
