Of all the things that Trump has said, why is anyone freaked out about him saying that he could stand on 5th Avenue and shoot someone and not lose any voters? From what I can tell, that’s a factual statement, and a true one at that. (Why that is is a whole other discussion.) It seems like one of the least controversial things he has ever said, yet there seems like there is a fuss about it. For example, this response in Quora.
The fact that you think it’s true is not a whole 'nuther discussion. It’s the whole this discussion. Like they say, if reality is not in line with your premises, doubt your premises, not reality.
Perhaps because it’s really in poor taste, and not that kind of thing you want the POTUS to be saying? I mean, politicians generally shouldn’t be bragging that they’re so popular that they could get away with murder. It’s definetly not professional.
I don’t get the panicked arm waving. This is the sort of thing people have said about others since forever and more egotistical people will occasionally say about themselves in private or in offhand conversations and Trump will say it out load as he has no filter.
Aren’t we all kind of way past “OMG Trump said this!! It’s over for him!!” at this point? Public opinion will not take down Trump but the law can, and he has no more respect for the law than any other thing in his worldview. The only hope is that he fucks up big enough for impeachment and at this point I would not bet on that panning out. nor will he quit we are in a for a long ride.
Maybe.
Trump got elected largely because of the codependent relationship the media had with him. Remember: Trump had to pay people to come to his first rally. When the media started to capitalize on his shock value, he milked it for all he could.
Trump is, and has always been, a two-bit snake oil salesman. But instead of informing the dupes that the scammer was selling bullshit, the media focused almost exclusively on his bad breath.
Yes, but mainly because people have come to the conclusion that he’s right, and he is above all restriction or consequence. That he could in fact offhandedly murder some random person for fun and be acclaimed for it. That his base would cheer him, and the Republican party shield him from punishment.
I used to think that until that bit about dissing a dead serviceman’s family and the other about grabbing women by the pussy made no appreciable difference. Now I’m not so sure.
If there was incontrovertible proof (eg video from various angles) of him announcing he was going to just go out and kill someone for a laugh, and then did it, and if his victim was completely undeserving and sympathetic (random pretty innocent white girl maybe) he would lose the majority of his support, and gain the support of a few psychos.
At the other end of the scale, if the facts were murky, and there was a skerrick of an excuse for the killing and the victim unsympathetic (ugly male illegal immigrant), he would keep most of his base, lose a few principled people and gain a few who like the idea of rough justice.
Look at all the things his base has already forgiven him; murder would be just another step along the range.
The best actual ‘deal’ Trump has ever made is training his clownishness for the estiamted US$2B he got in free publicity from the media who adores his circus act and the advertising his outragous behavior could sell.
Trump’s supporters will rationalize away any misdeed or crass statement to venerate their hero. They’re like tone deaf Reaganites with partial lobotomies.
How would the Republicans do that? Even as president (and he said this before he was elected), he’d be subject to NY state law. What could any NY state Republican official do? The governor is a Democrat, so a pardon is completely out of the question.
When Democrat sitting President Bill Clinton got a blow job in the White House, his numbers among his base hardly moved. And he didn’t just say, " If I got a blow job from a White House intern, I wouldn’t lose any of my voters".
He actually DID get a blow job from a young female intern AND LIED about it on national TV.
And even today he is worshiped by feminists as a great political leader.
All Trump did was joke about shooting some one and the Left goes crazy. He never DID anything of the sort.
Yet Bill Clinton sexually assaults a young female intern under his authority and the Left is silent.
Imagine, just imagine, a Republican President sexually assaulting a young female intern in the White House. The hue and cry from the Left would be deafening and that President would be banished from the political scene forever.
I think most people would consider the actions described in the Access Hollywood tape to be at least as reprehensible as consensual extramarital oral sex.
To the mind of a Trump supporter, he never actually did any of those things.
But if there was undeniable proof that Trump just randomly shot someone? Yeah, he loses his support. The majority of Trump supporters are not inherently evil people. And if folks on the left continue to insist that they are, DT will get his second term in office.
