I don’t agree. I think there are two reasons people think this, one is because of old sci-fy movies that showed this to increase terror in the movies but more importantly because of the lack of proof of existence of your preferred belief. As markn_1 mentioned a significant portion of the population already believes, and they aren’t loosing their shit.
But, for believers, it explains away the lack of actual evidence. ‘Of course there’s no evidence, the government is keeping it from us’
I got into a conversation with a bigfoot believer once. He stated he personally knew some people who had been killed by bigfoot. In an attempt to expose him, I said, “that’s interesting, what were their names, I want to look up their case”. He said, ‘you won’t find anything about it in the paper, the government is covering it up’. Why would the government care that an animal killed someone enough to cover it up? Because there is no proof?
I doubt it. And anyway, if sightings were real, we’ve been visited for 70 years at least. If they haven’t attacked by now, they are probably not interested.
They’re just killing time waiting for the ship with the Genesis Device to arrive. These things take time, might as well have some fun with the primitive life forms before they’re wiped out.
The idea that society would collapse if alien life was revealed is one born of bogotry, stupidity, and outright classism. It is rooted in the idea that the ‘lower’ classes are only a small step removed from herd animals. And that a bit of psychological pressure would see them devolve into chaos completely.
It’s the same nonsense that saw the carpet bombing of cities in WW2. Blow up enough peasants and the rest will riot. Even Churchill held this view despite the evidence to the contrary in bombed British cities.
