Ironically, the old Japanese name for America translates to ‘Rice Country’, so techincally they could say the same thing about Chevys and Harleys.
It’s mildly offensive, I guess, but I think it’s because it’s too humorous (as **vandal[b\] point out) and useful to be really offensive.
Remember when people used to call those big radios “ghetto blasters”? It wasn’t really offensive, because it was funny and colorful and not really directed at a race.
