I’m gong to make this safe for work so I am not providing links. I was cruising a popular vintage erotica board I discovered for the first time the other day and happened across some interesting threads.
There was this one active board member who was an adult model photographer back in the day, and in response to inquiries about his business was giving some background on the real world histories of what happened to certain popular softcore and hardcore adult magazine and video “loop” models from the 60’s and 70’s. He said that in contrast to being “secretaries and college coeds” as claimed by the magazine copy many, if not most, of the models worked as call girl escorts while they were modeling.
His point was that these girls did not typically make huge dollars modeling, and actually made more money as strippers or dancers, but the really big money ($ 100 to $300 a pop if you were popular and this was big money in the 60’s and 70’s) was in being an escort, and so a number of girls went in that direction. This was not common “street” prostitution, but more of an exclusive call girl scenario handled through an agency, and at some point the escort and the caller agreed to a price for desired services and the transaction was consummated.
You would imagine that most reasonably astute people would be “No shit Sherlock” at these revelations, but not the adult men that liked these vintage models. You would think he had taken a messy dump in their cereal bowl with the accusations and name calling that ensued.
These men had long built up a mental fantasy of these vintage models who flashed their T&A for a living as being wholesome and virtuous girls who went back to their apartments and did their English lit. homework after a hard day strutting and teasing, and when their modeling days were done, then went on the the white picket fence and married a good man just like them. The photographer’s tales of having to deal with controlling and abusive boyfriends/pimps, and occasionally bailing out these popular models after they were arrested for prostitution was met with unbelievable howls of protest and anger that he was a horrible liar when he revealed their buxom fantasy Madonna’s were actually fairly common whores.
I’ll defend men if we are accused unfairly, but sometimes, even otherwise intelligent men are were are just clueless, self deluding idiots.
Just because something may have happened to someone, somewhere, once, does not mean it will be repeated with everyone with a similar background.
(In other words, I am betting this is NOT the case with the VAST majority of people who have had an extensive amount of anal sex, either on or off camera)
Not true, or at least it’s not true in the case of several women who have:

The OP’s references are outdated. The 60s and 70s were a time when porn was largely underground, sleazy and shady. Now porn has gone mainstream. Today’s porn scene, in the “Porn Valley” of California, is nothing like the seedy world of 1970s porn depicted in Boogie Nights. Most of the top level performers make enough money to earn a comfortable living and from what I have read, they typically have normal and even boring off-camera lives. I can’t remember where I read it but one quote even said something like “most porn stars are Republicans” and that the directors’ offices are “filled with golf trophies.” Everything I’ve read about the modern day porn business is as different from the sleazy 70s stereotypes as night from day.
Also I know a girl who was the star of one of the most popular solo-model websites. I might as well just say it - it’s “Midwest Mandy.” I think she’s “retired” but her site is still active and she was, indeed, paying for her college and other living expenses this way and making a lot of money. She is extremely smart and the furthest thing in the world from sleazy.

Argent Towers, I dont know much about the porn business, but I would think that since there is SO much more porn now than there has ever been before, and so many more performers competing for their slice of the market share, that the average “porn star” is making much less than the stars of the 70’s, simply because there is so much more competition.
I would like to know how much a new face, appearing in a well known, nationally distributed companies movie (for example Hustler’s Barely Legal) will get for her time and talents.
I really have no idea, but I would wager a guess its under 5000 bucks.
Porn is all about fantasy, so it’s hardly surprising when some people react with hostility or denial when they have their bubbles burst.
As for the realities of the porn business then or now, I have no insights or personal experience, but I did know a few girls back in Uni who were paying their tuitions by dancing at the local strip clubs. I’m sure this is unusual but hardly rare.
I knew Jody Maxwell too! She and I attended UMKC for a semester or two in the mid-Seventies. An adult movie theater had just opened in Kansas City, the Old Chelsea (I think it closed some time ago), and one of her movies was playing. It’s very surreal attending a porn film with the star seated right in front of you, giving commentary throughout. It was a Friday afternoon ‘field trip’ and I think all of those in the classes we shared attended.
I googled her before this post and had to laugh at some of the sites describing her as something akin to a brilliant but befuddled nun who just found herself in the porn industry. Her dad was a prominent attorney but the father/daughter relationship reminded me of the Kardashians. She dated a place kicker for the Chiefs, Jon Stenerud; at the same time she was seeing an unknown pro-golfer and a few students.
Small world! Jody’s main claim to fame was her ability to talk and sing while performing fellatio. Personally, I think it was the result of a failed attempt to get her to shut up for five minutes. But she was a fairly decent actress (for the genre). I last saw her when one of her movies (“Outlaw Ladies” I think) premiered at the Dove theater.
My family knew her because my Dad worked for her Dad, who was the Prosecuting Attorney of Jackson County.
I honestly did mow her lawn. It was a measure of how monumentally clueless I was about women at 15 that I managed to mow the lawn of a porn star and not get laid. Later on, I heard (second hand) that she was interested too. Didn’t manage to lose it until four years later.
