I’m afraid that this is a really stupid question, but if the Republicans really don’t want to impeach Trump, why aren’t any Republicans announcing that they are making a bid for the presidency?
If the Republicans want to stay in power after this, why not just abandon Trump, let him run out his term, and get someone to replace him in 2020?
There are. Mark Sanford, William Weld, and Joe Walsh all intend to run against him. Unfortunately for them, the Republicans in at least four states have already cancelled their primaries and more are expected to.
Also, Republicans are happy to have Trump, even if they hate him. He’s a rubber stamp who never leaves the spotlight. McConnell can do whatever he wants, and it’s hardly noticed.
