It would have been awesome if they’d written an episode in which Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Sulu were all unavailable for a time. That should have put Uhura in the big chair.

Sulu was in command on the bridge for “Errand of Mercy”. Dunno where scotty was. (Maybe Sulu had better “tactical: space combat” stats.)

It does seem strange to have the engineer command the ship, however cool Doohan was in Friday’s Child.
“Dere’s over four hundred guys up dere!” Seems like there would have been many more officers to take command.

Except that in Catspaw, while these folks and McCoy were all away, Lt. DeSalle was put in charge instead of Uhura.

Lt Uhura was in the big chair in “The Lorelai Signal” in the “Star Trek Animated Series”. Whih is not considered “canonical”, although it it probably should be.
