I was still under the impression that Melbourne was the head office of SDMB (Aust) pty ltd, but that may have become Sydney while I wasn’t looking.

This is the best way. Australian Dopefests are notoriously unreliable, and we just don’t have the population density to do them well (I love my fellow Dopers, but I’m not flying for hours for a beer with them). So, if somebody will be in a state capital anyway (when they’re from another part of the country), then this is a good time as:
a) it’s one extra person to come along, and our dopefests are small, and
b) it’s more of an incentive to feel guilty if you don’t show up.
Overseas Dopers are especially valuable for b).

I’d fly for a couple of hours to have a beer with Charles Manson. Yeah, I’m desperate.
I’ll hopefully attend one in the future but I have way too many travel expenses going on this year to be adding in another.
I know, I know…sucks to be me, huh? Sounds like I live the life of luxury but actually the sad fact is that a planned week away in September (still within the same State, no less) is enough to blow my travel budget to all hell.
I’ll take a raincheck, and join up for the next one.
