why not on a sunday?

In the ‘just wondering’ category: Does anyone know as to the origin of the phrase, “Never on a Sunday”? I just included it as a subject heading in an email and, after sending it, am wondering if whatever I am not supposed to do may have some unintended and incredibly unfortunate implication to the receiver. Me and afterthoughts. Hope the World of Truth out there holds an answer. Thanks.

WAG, the ‘blue law’?

Another WAG: since the song came from a movie where the singer was supposed to be a “working girl” it must have meant she wanted a day off from the job.

The lyrics support this guess, but not exclusively. She might have been a carhop whose shift ended at midnight Saturday.

Thank you for responding to the query. Being fresh to posting messages to an Internet message board of any kind, I was not sure if expressing appreciation is a breach of etiquette, or a faux-pas of some kind.

I said I’m not a real Internet afficianado - I paired ‘WAG’ with ‘blue law’ in the search. Another ‘duh’ moment to realize, after separating the two, that WAG is not a prohibition-era term. Learn more every day.

The song “Never on a Sunday” has this verse:

The song won the Academy Award for Best Original song in 1960.

I thought that you could “do it” twice on Sunday.

Not to quarrel at all, but I wager they had the equivalent of Wild Ass Guesses even that far back – maybe even further to Biblical times.

It’s nice to have thanks expressed, but not required. Just shows your breeding. Some appreciate things like that.

While you’re checking things out, I bet you can locate the lyrics to “Never On Sunday.” They will help with your quest.

Now you don’t even have to search for the lyrics. All things come…

Never on Sunday was a 1960 Greek movie. Melina Mercouri played a prostitute “with a heart of gold” whom an American tourist (Jules Dassin) falls in love with. The title was because Mercouri’s character didn’t work on Sundays.

And the song BobT mentions was from the movie and was sung by Mercouri.

Not to stray too far OT (Off Topic - which itself can be a breach of etiquette) but there was a post on this by a mod over at the ATMB forum. I couldn’t turn up the post in question (through ‘Search’) but the heart of it was the thanking taxed the hamster (slowed the board down) and was not needed. Still I do myself sometimes as fellow Dopers occasionally go above and beyond the call of duty.
Just a little FWIW (for what its worth).

Cheers.
