I dont want to talk directly about Gauantanimo Bay - ill do that in GD, but was wandering why there are only about 3 or 4 threads which deal with it. What does this say about SD audience? Even as a debating topic there are lots of tricky wee arguments for both sides - i thought it would be ideal topic to discuss. Any thoughts?
The Gitmo prisoners are unique…we have never been faced by an enemy like this one. At worst these people have sworn and dedicated their lives to the destruction of the USA. At best,t hey are innocent dupes. They HAVE to be incarcerated for the duration of the conflict, because we don’t know how Al_Queda is linked together. Once they start spilling their guts, we can proceed with indictments, or free them if they are not guilty.
But to those who whine about their “rights” being violated, I remind you all that WE ARE AT WAR, and are opposed by a bunch of fanatics who think that they are doing God’s will by killing innocent people.I certainly would have no problem with dumping the guilty ones into the Straights of Florida.
Probably because there’s not a lot of information that one can get one’s hands on. While I know that won’t stop some people, a lack of facts makes it hard to discuss anything.
It’s not really a GQ, but a GQ answer is: you don’t appear to have searched for the right term: it is Guantanamo, not Gauantanimo. Searching for that term in GD yielded me 105 threads. At least six on the first page of thread results are directly on topic.
I think it is going to be very hard to keep this one to the OP.
I will stick to it as best as I can, but there is no factual answer for this, so:
Disclaimer: What follows is my opinion
I think the reason that this doesn’t come up for discussion too often, is because for a lot of americans this is a non-issue, and I would surmise that most of the people on the SDMB are american.
I think a lot of folks in the US (not all, by any means) think that whatever the prisoners get is too good for them, on the assumption that the government wouldn’t have picked them up unless they were members of Al Qaeda.
Nope. At best (or worst, depending on your point of view), they’re totally innocent, period. And innocent people jailed with no legal recourse. Actually, several of them have already been freed, and in some case, the only thing they were guilty of was being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
And for instance, if the police don’t know how is organized some gang of drug traffickers in your neighborhood, it would be fine to jail you just because you happen to be there and could be linked to the criminals, for all they know. Only until the end of the war on drugs, of course.
So, after such a long time, nobody has managed to have them “spill their guts”? How long will it take, exactly? 2 more years? 10 years? What if they have nothing to tell? Will they stay there till the end of their live, just in case they coul perhaps conceal something?
Quite logical. Jail them first then try to find out what they could be accused of. Or keep them in if you really can’t find anything.
At war? Then, are they war prisonners? Oh, no, I forgot. This would grant them some rights, and they should have none, because…err…because someone, somewhere think or has thought that maybe they could know something or be involved in something.
And do you intend to do so without trial? Since you don’t seem to care much for the due process of law, perhaps you wouldn’t really mind, indeed…Also, what do you intend to do with the innocent ones (including those who have already been freed after a couple years of vacations in Cuba)? For some mysterious reasons, you seem to always forget them.
Concerning the OP, there are already been many posts on this topic.
