Why Pull the Old Log Out?

If the cheap attention-grabbing title isn’t bad enough-- and it is-- I’m also writhing on the horns of a dilemma: This is probably a General Question, but on the other hand, it is About This Message Board. So I’ll throw myself on the mercy of the moderator(s) and let he or she or it or them dispose of me as he or she or it or them sees fit.

I like the cool way all of the graphics Fade to Black & White when I log out of this site. But is it necessary to log out if I’m logged in on my home PC, or even a work PC where no one else is going to use my PC? And not just on this site, but-- hence the General Question-- on any site that requires logging on, e.g. secure bill-paying sites?

I’m sure I’ve forgotten to log out, then eventually shut down the browser/PC without any known ill effects. Am I right to suspect that logging out is only necessary if I’m sharing a PC with others? Or does this closure afford some intrinsic benefit to user or system?

The only information I can supply to this subject is that I’ve only logged out once. That was just a quirk caused by noticing there was a way to log out and wanting to know what would happen if I did. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, nothing impressive happened, so I’ve never done it again.

You are correct; it’s not necessary to sign out unless you share your computer with another SDMB user.

As for security reasons, well, that’s up to you and your situation and your comfort level.

I wouldn’t dream of logging out … I might not get back in again!

Hm. I get no fun color changes logging out. Is it browser-specific?

I get the fade to black and white – cool effect! – and my browser is Internet Explorer.
