Why recount the vote at all?

Why recount the popular vote at all? Can’t Florida’s electoral college just cast their votes and be done with it? After all, the presidency is based on electoral votes, not the popular vote and, AFAIK, the electoral college is not bound to vote the same as the popular vote.

Sorry if this was asked before, but there have been so many election threads, I didn’t know where to search.

The vote was not a vote for President. It was a vote for whose group of delegates will represent Florida in the electorial college.

You are correct that Florida is one of several states that does not have a law requiring their electorial college delegates to vote for the person who wins the state election.

I believe that if Bush wins in Florida, at least one delegate will vote for Gore.

ok - that makes more sense (if such a thing is possible in politics) - thanks

really? why? electoral college appointments are given to party loyalists as a reward. Take a look at some of the other election threads going on. In most of them you’ll see a variety of opinions ranging from (well I won’t name names, but…) Bush supporters who cannot see that Ms. Harris’ role as both Secretary of State AND co chair of the Bush campaign lends itself at the least to a LOOK of impropriety, to Gore supporters who are still arguing that PBC should be re-voted 'cause some 19,000 voters there screwed up their ballots.
I believe the EC appointees will be the folks who still mouth the mantra “we won more counties” and argue that hand counting ballots and counting “pregnant chads” as valid are wrong, despite the fact hand counting and including “pregnant chads” as valid are STANDARDS according to the law in TEXAS that Bush signed.

Nope. The General Question is asked and answered. I’m closing this thread. Please take your speculation elsewhere.
