Why Roman Numerals?

Why do they put the year of production and copyright at the end of movies and television shows in Roman numberals?

Mostly to confuse the viewer. The idea was that people take longer to decipher roman numerals and won’t realize the film was three (or five or ten) years old. It later became traditional.

It used to give a classic look to the titles and/or credits (MCMLXIV). Now that the year is MM, it looks kinda stupid.

I believe RealityChuck nailed this one.

I’d have sworn that Cecil did a bit on this, but darned if I can find it.
