Okay. Mr. Sentinal has been posting lots and lots of interesting theories in the “Are black women looking better?” thread. The problem is that his posts is the sort half baked “poor white guy” dribble more appropriate for a backwoods Junior High school than a message board of intellegent people. Because I think that my ranting is too off topic to the OP in that thread I will put them here.

Or the poverty and lack of social services that black people have been subjected to for years. And bad schools that keep education levels low. Also, people look harder for black people to commit crimes. Cops tend to look away from white crimes (trust me, more than one white friend has recieved a warning about drug pocession that a black friend would have been booted to the prison system for). Do you honestly believe that black people are just worse people and genetically predisposed to crime? Truth is we like black-on-black crime. It prevents people from rising up against real injustice.

Tell that to the people who put “No Italians served” signs up or the mother that warns hers daughter against “those eye-talians”. And I believe we still blame the poor for quite a lot of things. The only difference is that those people were white skinned, so they do not carry their stigma through the generations once the accent wears away.

I’ve already talked about this one. Equality of opertumity is not the same as wanting to be white. As much as you’d like people not like you to lose their identity (and enter your world fully, where you already have the advantage), people are forming dynamic beautiful communities and ways of life that arn’t centered around you. It would be nice, however, if they could get equal rights.

In the end, what people are named is no real way to judge them.

That was a farce at best, and The Rev. Jesse Jackson had to jump on that bandwagon. It shouldn’t be a national language, or taught in the schools.
I, personally, would rather that black youth, or white youth for that matter learn “Ebonics” on their own, with their friends as I did.
So I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but I don’t think it should be taught in school.

Very nice post. I just wanted to be sure that you were not getting me in anyway associated with the bilge Sentinal posts. You did make one reference to hyphenating in your rant, and I want to clearly state that my topic on that in GD is in no way targeted at any particular group. I am talking about a general practice that I see as decisive to America. I am not, and will never, single one group for criticism, unless it is a group that volintarily forms to espouse something wrong. Example: I will criticize the KKK, I will not make blanket statements about or criticisms of, say, Cubans. Is this clear?

Ummm, the only large go-around regarding Ebonics that I remember was the one in Oakland. That school board wanted Federal funding to educate the teachers in Ebonics so that they could better appreciate what the kids were saying. Thus, when a kid used AAVE/Ebonics to respond in class, the teacher would realize what the kid was saying correctly in his dialect and redirect him to say it correctly in Standard English. I know of no school board that has proposed teaching subjects in AAVE/Ebonics. (BTW, in the Oakland brouhaha, my memory is that Jesse Jackson came out in opposition to the school board.)

I retract the statement about Jesse. In retrospect, I believe that I have simply parroted what I heard and was told from that time. In fact, for some reason, I can clearly remember Jesse being supportive of ebonics, and I think if you ask anyone else in the bay area, I think that they, to would implicate Jesse Jackson, even though he clearly did not.

Well, he did support the amended proposal as I recall. I suspect that Jesse has done enough grandstanding in his day that, after a while, the general memory is that he is always silly. (He certainly gets my “silly” vote for his recent antics over the school suspensions.)

Good rant. I echo what the others have said regarding quality, and agree with their constructive criticism.
I must confess that as I read it, I found it hard to believe that anybody could think Sentinel was important enough to go through that much work for ( ), but in justice, I must give you props for handling a dirty job that rightly belonged to many of us here. I’m not putting this well, but let me just thank you for doing all that so I don’t have to (as if I could! That was quite thorough).
