No, because he had a heart operation, told people here about it and, since people here know and like him, they were sympathetic. If he’d told a group of RL friends, family and/or co-workers, he’d have gotten the same reaction from them. If he’d picked a MB, NG or mailing list he’d never participated in or a group of people he’d never interacted with and informed them, he’d likely gotten a mixture of indifferent to semi-sympathetic “Oh, that’s too bad.” type reactions.
On the other hand, the fact that he can be going in for major surgery and fairly consistantly keep looking at the humorous aspects of the situation might have contributed something to the situation.

If other people like it, that’s a plus, but not necessary. Any more than it’s necessary that you, I or anyone else likes a sig not written by Wally.
Why must you be missing something? No one can like everyone and no one can be liked by everyone. If you didn’t like every popular kid in your high school, did that mean you were missing something?

Leaving aside the fact that Wally is one of our cleverest and nicest posters, he did not “go on about it.” He mentioned it once—and most of his mentions were humorous—and he kept up his joking and good input right up till the day of surgery—no “ooh, poor me!” posts at all. I doubt I could do the same, or that you could, either.

Okay, Julius. Let’s get a few things straight. You’ve found two semi-unfunny (in your opinion) sig lines and feel that that is the sum total of Wally’s work. If so, then “lurking a lot” means “I read for a full three minutes before bothering to post.” Try the search engine. Try looking at some of the threads that are more than 20 days old. You’ll find one of the most amazingly humourous posters you’ve ever seen. No thread is safe from his drive-by one-liners. A simple “Putz.” from him would drive normal men to insanity. You’ll find a man who impressed all with his wit and style.
You have not impressed us with wit and style. If anything, you have struck an image of whining putridity. Someone who just pops his (her?) head in to complain rather than contribute.
Please, should you wish to claim that our Emporers of Wit have no clothes, make sure that you have bothered to dress yourself as well. Oh, and spell said Emperor’s names correctly. It make a big difference in how seriously you get taken.
