This is wrong. The pilum was a javelin. Late-period Roman legionaries carried either the verutum (a throwable spear) or the spiculum (definitely a javelin - Vegetius says it is the same spear formerly called the pilum.). They also carried several plumbatae, which were sorta javelins, sorta darts.
