Having been around computers a long time I find it very strange that someone would use the name of an old format for a completely new (and unrelated) one.
So why does DivX the new MPEG-4 file encoding format, share the same name as DivX the failed proprietary Circuit City disposable DVD format? As far as I’ve found they share absolutely nothing in common (that is, other than having the same friggin’ name!)
I heard it started as satire. Now, they are actually starting to sell DVD players that can play CDs with video files in the NEW DivX format. Confusing? You bet. Why the hell they didn’t change the name before incorporating into an official product, I have no clue.
Right, so they’ll be able to bring back the evilcheatingpseudodvds under the same name, get consumers totally confused, and then **TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! BAWHAAAAHAAAA **
[sub]And they said I was “mad” at Sony! I’ll show them![/sub]
Yep, it was a typical hacker joke, poking fun at the failed Circuit City pay-per-view DVD format. Actually, the entire original name of the hacked codec lets you in on the joke: DivX;-)
