Why was this thread locked?

Can I ask this? I’m not trying to re-open or continue discussing, I’m just curious as to why it was locked. Here it is. I know it was about homework, but it wasn’t asking for the answer, just a bump in the right direction. If you read it, no one gave him the answer, he figured it out himself with the help of some other dopers. So why was it locked. He did eventually figure out the answer (which was never posted, so it’s not like someone did his homework for him), so the thread was done, but since when did we lock threads just becuase they were answered (unless they’re starting to head in the direction of something that violates terms of the board) and the thread probably would have slipped off the first page within the next several hours, so why was it locked?

Because it’s a homework question. They’re not allowed on the boards.

Wrong. It’s been stated by the staff many times that asking for help with homework is perfectly acceptable, especially if you’ve made an effort and shown your work so far. Asking us to do your homework is not.

We Moderators are all individuals and we usually try to do what we think is the correct thing.

I closed the thread, not because it was asking for homework help, per se, but because it involved homework, and it appeared to me that the OP had basically figured it out. The help that was given by Dopers before I locked it was fine. But I’ve seen too many GQ threads take on a life of their own, after the question has been asked and answered.

Pretend My Name is Witty did a fine job of NOT asking us to do his/her homework. That’s to be commended.

It’s a gray area–what else can I say?

I’d like to get someone to do my home-work. The floors need to be swept, the laundry done, the curtains cleaned, the dishes washed…

Alright, but I don’t do Windows.

Thanks, Joey P, for asking this here, I wouldn’t have thought of it.

I’ve never quite known the rules on homework threads, but there have been a couple of times when the SDMB has been the only place where anyone could help (usually weekends) with assignments that are driving me crazy! I’ve just always made sure that I’m not asking anyone to do it for me, just help me understand concepts so I can answer things myself.

I did e-mail samclem asking why it’d be locked, but my e-mail account is thesaxoffender@… so it’s probably got blocked by spam filters or summat.

Cheers

Harry

Harry,

I actually DID get your emails(just read them). I have no filters. Why I didn’t read them on the day I locked your thread----can’t say. I’ll try to find out, as I certainly want to reply to emails from dopers.

“Sunrise semester” (from my memory of the 1970’s or so), was an educational, college course program offered on public tv at a rediculous hour of the morning.

I think I answered the “why” I closed it. Just the way I called it. Next time, I might have done different.

Thankyou samclem you were probably right to have locked it, once I’d figured it out, there was no need for a thread and it’d just developed into a bit of a conversation!

Being too young and from the wrong country (I think…), I dont recall “Sunrise Semester”, but we have BBC programs to help pass AS subjects sometimes. They’re on at about four in the morning. I’ve always thought that was a little silly, since the kind of person who would be flunking their A-Levels wont be interested in waking up for that program or recording them. They should be on daytime TV so people skipping college can at least learn something rather than watching Trisha.

While I agree we should not be doing homework for people, if I remember back to my schooldays, I was never given just one math problem for homework. I was given a whole page of problems that usually progressed from simple to hard. I remember occasionally getting stuck on a hard one. And this was the situation daily, if not every other day.

And so, I guess I’m saying that if someone occasionally posts one math problem, I hardly think that qualifies as doing their work for them. Especially since we all agree to ‘help’ and not ‘do’ the work.

Well, CK, I’m not going to do your work for you, but let me give you some starters. Do you ever remember going to a grocery store, and there was an aisle of stuff that wasn’t food, but the items had names on them like ‘cleanser,’ ‘detergent,’ and ‘bleach’?.. That should get you going in the right direction.
Peace.

Then there were those of us that got stuck on the simple ones. :frowning:
