Why won't my resolution change?

I’m using a Dell inspiron laptop. I want to lower my resolution to play a game, as it wont run in the higher mode. When I do this, I get a message saying that I was requested to lower the resolution by another program (which is true) but after 15 seconds the screen flickers and returns to the higher mode. Can someone tell me how to end this?

How old is the game, and what OS are you running (windows XP?)

If it’s a really old game, you can try the compatability mode that is built into windows xp (right click on the exacuteable, click on the compatability mode)

If that doesn’t work, then you may just have to give it up. I had to give up a few good games when I made the jump to XP

When you change the resolution in Windows, you get a confirmation dialog; this basically says 'are you happy with the display like this?" - if you click yes (or is it OK), the resolution remains set in the new way; if you click no, it reverts; it also reverts after 15 seconds - in case you have chosen a setting where the display just doesn’t work at all (in which case you wouldn’t be able to see the dialog to express your dissatisfaction).

It sounds like this might be happening, but that Windows is trying to paint the dialog box outside the new visible area of desktop. I’m not sure why it should do this though, or exactly how to help, but there are keyboard shortcuts that should enable it to be moved into the visible area(I just can’t remember what they are) before the timeout occurs.

Nevermind. The box that normally says “do you want to keep these settings” wasn’t appearing during my last attempts. Problem solved.
