Why won't these damn aftershocks stop!

c below lol

We had a really nasty 5.0 this morning at about 11:30 it felt alot bigger because it was really shallow. It was quite violent, part of the roof at Riccarton mall collapsed. We also had about 8 aftershocks or whatever you wanna call them over the past 24 hours. No the Dux is about the same as all the other pubs (too much) but it was nice. That sux about your dads pub, it wasn’t the lincoln was it? my friends dad use to own it.

Thank you so much - you are helping right now! thanks for the support and just keep sending you good thoughts it is much appreciated!

To correct my other post there have been 20 aftershocks over the last 24 hours as at 4:47pm NZ time

also a site with pics of the aftermath and info and some videos Canterbury quake may have been on 'new' fault line - NZ Herald

Is this number of small earthquakes abnormal? I know small earthquakes are very common, but I don’t know what it was like years before this recent large one.

I thought I read somewhere that New Zealand has thousands of earthquakes a year, but 99% of them are so faint (or they originate at sea) that either you can’t feel them or they’re barely a tremble.

Such a beautiful place. I’d move there in a minute if I could. Hang on, Kiwi Dopers!

We don’t call ourselves “Shaky Isles” for nothing!

Yes, we’re right on the edge of the Pacific ‘Ring of fire’ and quakes are common along the faultlines. I grew up in Wellington and currently live in the Hawke’s Bay, both areas smack on that line.

What I’m used to is nothing like what the guys in Chriustchurch are going through - our recent cluster of quakes is something like a half dozen over a week, the largest being a 5.1 quite deep and distant (the one at the weekend felt like the ground just lifted a couple of inches and dropped back).

Christchurch is getting hundreds a week, close by and shallow - thousands since the main shake. PTSD is becoming common, their houses are accumulating damage with each large aftershock and they are on a previously unknown fault. They’re not ‘meant’ to have earthquakes at all!

bengangmo, was it the Duvauchelle pub you referred to?

From what I have learned by searching the net and stuff, it is quite normal, experts have said that Christchurch will experience quakes/aftershocks for at least a year. B4 the big 1 I have in my 32 years only felt a total of 4 earthquakes. Well that number has certainly changed over the past 7 weeks. The scary thing is Christchurch has not had an aftershock for over 24 hours, and im not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing, it is very stressfull

yip that sounds about right. The problem is that the ones we are getting now are from a new fault that no-one ever new it existed. very scary. Oh and yeah come on over it is a lovely place to live even if the ground is shaking lol btw where are you from?

You know it? If I answer that question its going to be pretty much obvious who I am…anybody will be able to work me out pretty easily…

Really? I have no idea who you are and really don’t care, do you really think that highly of yourself. Oh I better not say anymore cause people will know who I am…oh bugger my cover has been blown! grow up!

nah…but there’s stuff I’ve shared here on the basis of being annonymous…stuff that I don’t neccessarily want old classmates, family friends or otherwise neccessarily knowing…you, I don’t know from a bar of soap - its others that I would be more worried about…

fair enough mate, now i understand what you mean. I actually feel the same way, sorry if I jumped the gun. full credit mate

bengangmo, no worries, say no more. It is a damn shame that the Duvauchelle pub was damaged because it must be one of the oldest hotels in the country. 1860s vintage I believe? Having said that, I can’t find any concrete information about what is happening to it. There was a seed exchange meeting (lovely!) in its car park last week and that’s the most I can glean.

I have the locals’ dope on the Duvauchelle Hotel, partly damaged, partly fine. They are looking to rebuild using the original materials where possible, hurrah!
