Why won't you tell us where you're from?

Sorry, that’s classified.

I agree, it’s a pet peeve of mine. (As is using the QUOTE tags when citing an outside source, leaving us with “originally posted by George Bush” )

What worse, we get tons of OP’s in GQ that ask location specific questions and no location is given- thus leading to several/many worthless attempted answers while waiting for the thoughtless OP to come back and tell us where he lives.

Because it’s just one more outlet for me to be bitchy and snarky without being obvious. My current location is one I came up with after being majorly annoyed with the husband. Which I know renders it meaningless to everyone but me but - eh - so what? Besides everyone knows where I am anyway (and I make sure I mention it if it’s relevant.

Wait, you mean “San Jose” is a real place? I thought that was a joke from that song!

This is why I changed mine. Hell, mine used to give almost the exact location. Also, the fact that I am part of the Seattle Pub Trivia mob might be a tip off. Or not. Depending on who reads/sees the thread or when we talk about it outside of the thread. If someone asks a location specific question, I usually mention either the location or an area obviously pertaining to the location in my answer. (“Any landmarks near your home?” “Yeah, the Space Needle is a pretty popular one.”)

Also, recent real life incidents have led me to feel I may be giving *too * much information out. I’m certain the location field wasn’t the culprit, however; I’m not quite as excited about telling where we moved to.

10th largest city in the USA- but *still * dudes don’t know the way here.

Since I decided to pony up I’ve lived in 4 different towns and 2 countries. In the last 5 years… heck, in the last 12 years… I’ve moved with ridiculous frequency, so this is normal for me.

And I’ve posted from 4 other countries. Wherever I happen to be isn’t necessarily where I’m from, or even where I’m currently living.

“Thalassas” means “the sea” in Greek and it’s the name of a “macroarea” I wrote for a MUD. It is more “me” than, say… Romano d’Ezzelino, Italy, which would have been an actual location for a while.

… can’t people find ?

I’ll bring it up freely when it’s relevant to a particular thread or exchange, but otherwise, I do prefer a bit more anonymity. Some posts I make are general enough, but reach a much higher degree of specificity by revealing where I’m from (if someone I know personally happened upon such a post). I don’t expect anyone to track my posting history to piece details together, but there’s no point in me possibly, inadvertently revealing more than I intended.

Just a precaution. And for the record: Oakland, CA.

I probably erred on the too-specific side of things. I doubt most people on the board have ever heard of Arlington Heights, IL.

It’s a suburb of Chicago, btw. You take 90 West to either Arlington Heights Road or Rand Road (both well-marked exits), and you’re there! You coudl also take the Kirchoff or NW Hwy exits (Euclid, too), but those are for the south-siders of Arlington Heights…we don’t go there!

OK, I updated my location. It’s not realy my actual home, but I’m there often enough the it seem like it is.

Putting my location has caused me nothing but grief. I complain about the traffic, the house prices, and the lack of a Target store.

Do I get sympathy? No, I get told “You live in Hawaii, shut up”

Woe is me.

Cem, come on now - you know you can’t take 90 to Rand, Kirchoff or Euclid. You have to go north on 53 first. We should get together one of these days - I work just down the street a bit. My location is actually one of the rooms in the courthouse on Euclid (I was feeling a mite irritated with Mr2U when I added it - see above post from me).

Oh - the husband grew up in AH - right by Ivy Hill School. (Rt. 12, A/H Road and Palatine Rd.) I’m from the SW burbs myself - and having met you Northwest Burb-ers since moving up here I’ve always wondered if there was something in the water up here…

What’ve you got to complain about, you live in Hawaii, just shut up will ya’

Is that what you wanted

I had something clever to put there- “Between the states of confusion and denial”, but it was too long, so I put my real location.

Some of us do…I’m originally from Arlington Heights!

It’s probably just paranoia. But it would probably only take a person a few minutes of checking on this board to figure out my real name. And I live in a relatively small town, so if you knew the name of the town it would take almost no effort to get my home address and phone number.

So while I like you guys, I’m not sure I want any of you dropping in unexpectedly at three in the morning because you happened to be in the neighbourhood.

Everyone here says they mention their actual location when it’s relevant. It’s easily possible that all of you guys do, in fact. But a lot of people don’t. I’m constantly looking at the location field to try to figure out where someone’s posting from - and when it’s no help, that’s an irritation. It might not be obvious when your location might be relevant to your readers, either - if someone uses a word or phrase that’s distinctive, for instance, and I get curious about whether it’s common usage where they’re from, well, no help if they don’t post their location.

I don’t need to know exactly what city you guys are from (for the paranoid among you) but a state (for United Statesians) or a country would be pretty helpful a lot of the time. There’s way too many posters for me to remember something like that about even the posters whose names I recognize well and who I know something about; for instance, Anastasaeon mentions that she’s part of some Seattle thingy here on the boards - but if I’d been trying to figure out where she was from, that wouldn’t be any help to me, because I hadn’t heard of whatever it is she’s talking about until she referenced it just now, so I certainly wouldn’t have been able to figure it out when reading an unrelated thread. I can’t possibly remember where everyone is from based on clues they hide in their posts. Honestly, it’s a little bit grandiose to think that everyone around here follows one’s posts closely enough to guess where they’re from.

Even with the people whose names are familiar and about whom I might be able to remember a few facts, it’s unlikely that their locations will be immediately familiar. With the majority of posters, who are perhaps familiar names but no more than that, there’s certainly no chance. So ninety percent of the time, even when I have some reason to be curious where someone’s from, there’s no help from the location field. And since most people sometimes forget to mention where they’re from even when it’s obviously relevant, it’s a continual (albeit extremely minor) frustration.

For a long time, I had a very boring and accurate location entry.

Time and time again, I’d get responses which assumed I was American, or which said “are you British?”, or something similar. So I thought why should I bother attempting to provide such information?
I decided to compromise, and put a location which takes all of ten seconds with that newfangled thing called ‘googol’ (sp?) to work out where I am. FWIW, I also share the OP’s dislike of threads which start “is this legal?..” and similar.

Anyone who Googles my location will get the general city where I live. It’s not a secret, I don’t really care, but I just didn’t feel like putting my real location there.
