Where the fuck are you?

I pit those who post with no indication of their geographical location, in a thread that is meaningless without that. For example, if someone tells me they’re getting an unexpected blizzard, I’d like to know if they’re in Chicago or Boston or Birmingham.

There is a spot for your location (as specific or general as you like) in your profile that will show up in your posts every time. If that makes you nervous, at least give a general idea of location in your post.

Does this bother no one else? Makes me want to break a window. And here and now in Maine, that would be disastrous.

Chicago-ish here. South suburbs, actually. I don’t want to be more specific, because I’m sure my place would be a popular tourist attraction.
As for the people who don’t even share that much, I do get curious, but that’s all. I’m sure they have their reasons.

I only gripe about it when they get shirty. Say we’ve having a discussion of the U.S. Senate, and someone says something dumb, and I say, “Whoa, that’s dumb,” and he says, “Well, I’m European, so you’re very foolish in thinking this applies to me.”

Yeah, and how was I supposed to know? Say so up front; don’t ambush us with it mid-thread.

Can I say I’m from Leaffanville, or is that joke too old?

I think we can all agree that people who describe their general location are clearly superior to those who don’t.

your location only shows up in your posts if you’re a member. it doesn’t do that for guests.

Agreed.

As my profile location is a purely psychological one, I try to avoid threads in which my physical location is relevant.

OTOH, it’s not that difficult to mention your location in your post. “Welp, I’m in Abu Dhabi, and it’s pissing cats and dogs here.” Are people seriously not doing that?

thank you. then they should say.

Well, Duh! I’m in front of the computer! How the hell would I be able to post?

You can read through post after post on a weather thread and not know the locations that that dozen or so people are talking about. I’ve tried to just nudge. I’ve said, “where are you, so I know what you’re talking about?” and “It would be great if everyone id’d their location so we know where your weather IS,” but to no avail.

Finally, the top of my head blew off. (Not really.)

Well, I thought you were in the bedroom with a tablet on your lap. Why are you hiding out there in the den with the desktop?

Coincidentally, while I live in Western New York, I’m currently visiting family - in the Adirondacks.

I live on Oahu. Right now it’s raining and the sun is bright in the sky.

Okay, some people, when they tell us their location, we don’t like them.

Rain stopped. Still enough time to hit the beach.

I fart in your general location!

Why is that, anyway? Is it considered a special privilege to be able to have your location stamped on every post? Or does it simply ask too much of the much-maligned hamsters to include locations for guests ?

I like to know the location of each poster (if they choose to share it, which admittedly, I have only done using a facetious palindrome*). It adds context to a person’s post.

This has probably been covered before but… if it’s at all possible, can we please add the location option for guests?
ETA: On a slightly different note: I still advocate for people putting their photo is their user profile. We wouldn’t need avatars or a third party website for photos if everyone would do this (if they choose, of course).

*This thread has made me reconsider using a “faux location”. I think I’ll put up my genuine, but general, location soon. Yay me.

I used to use an accurate physical location, if you were up on the subtleties of recent history. Now I use an accurate mental location.

I try to remember not everybody knows where I am, even though I mention it frequently and I’ve been here* a long time. But occasionally I think “do I really have to mention it outright, don’t you all know me by now?”

I also know my “Location” field is a bit obscure, though the clues are there if you take the time.

I am not even going to mention where, just so you can figure it out yourselves. It’s like a game!

*This country, and the SDMB.
