Why yell Geronimo when jumping?

I asked Jeeves how far Geronimo jumped on his famous jump and came to this forum and the question of why people yell Geronimo when they jump. When I lived in Lawton (named after one of Geronimos pursuers) I visited the Fort Sill military reservation and learned of Geronimos near capture when he was surrounded at the edge of a cliff. Rather than give up he jumped with his horse down (way, way down) into the Medicine River. Looking over that cliff, he must have been contemplateing suicide. The river from up there looks like a stream from a horse relieveing itself. THat could be a reason that the paratrooper choose that name to yell.

Ask Cecil: Why do parachutists yell “Geronimo!” when jumping from an airplane?

And what did Geronimo yell when jumping from an airplane?
“Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!”
