Why you be dissin' Jersey?

I will be visiting my sister who lives in Lindenwald (sp?). It’s about 20 minute drive away from Philidelphia. I’m not sure, but it’s not too far away from Camden.

I’ve always thought a person would have to be an imbecile to enjoy hockey. Thank you for not challenging that assumption.

Hey ratty and vixenation! I’m from Wildwood Crest, myself (where the beaches are free, as they are throughout the Wildwoods). My grandparents and mother still live there, and my sister lives in Egg Harbor Township. Sometimes I lament that I’m not from someplace more “stylish”, like South Florida or Southern California, but it sure could be a lot worse.

Lindenwold also happens to have a train station for PATCO, which is the system that takes you directly into Philadelphia, if you want to avoid driving.

But there’s no way in hell Lindenwold is a 20-minute drive from Philadelphia.

'Cause there is a rest stop station on the NJ Turnpike named after Howard Stern.

It may not be 20 minutes, but it’s not too far. Is it a lot of trouble to go from Lindenwold to New York?

I know it doesn’t seem far as the crow flies, but taking the White Horse Pike to 295 to the Schuylkill will get you stuck in some hellacious traffic. And then, too, there’s the actual destination - it may be 30 mins or so to the city, but it may take you another 20-25 to get to where you want to in the city itself.

I just wanted to pop in again and mention that most New Jerseyans don’t take the insults to heart. They just assume the person who’s saying it is ignorant.

I’m an imbecile because every person I, personally, have ever met from Jersey was an arrogant narcissistic prick? I’ve met about 20 people from Jersey, and they were all that way. You may notice I used YMMV and included a smiley as to not infer I was talking about everyone from Jeresy, but I guess that wasn’t enough to incur your wrath.

I notice you included no such qualifier when you insulted the entire world of hockey fandom, spanning the US and Canada. Thank you for not challenging my experience with people from Jersey.

False.

Actually… it was enough to incur his wrath.

Ah, well…“that” referring to my original use of YMMV and smiley, being not enough to infer that I was…I mean, er…pursuant to the inference that I was…uh…:smack:

Mount Laurel checking in.

My post got eaten last night, but you guys, as always, nailed it. The cities and the area around New York are crap. The rest is beautiful.

Yep. I lump people who tell Jersey jokes in with people that tell Polish jokes and blond jokes and the such. Not neccessarily bad people, but ignorant and unfunny.

As for stuff to do: well, you’re never more than 3 hours away from Philly or New York in Jersey, so there’s that. We also have minor league baseball (Camden Riversharks, Trenton Thunder), two pretty good teams in basketball and hockey, and two okay teams in football. There’s always nature. Mountains in the north. Plains and random big hills in the south. The ocean to the east. The river to the west. There’s always local stuff. Track meets and lacrosse games and bands and stuff. There’s plenty here.

Now, if only I could get over my hatred of Rutgers…

I officially retract and apologize for my statement that “I’ve always thought that a person would have to be an imbecile to enjoy hockey.” It was not my intention to insult hockey fans, most of whom are fine people whose interest in organized sports is normal, salutary, and none of my business. Those who judge people based on the behavior of hockey fans from the same state as them, however, may feel free to bite me.

Of Course…the whole state is arrogant and narcissistic and out of line and You’re not the mental patient. That’s believable.

I live in a nice suburban area with a 50-acre park a half block from my back yard. There are free fireworks in the park every July 4th and a Good Humor truck parks there every afternoon selling ice cream to the kids on the playground.

I love it here. I raise my kids here. I even make sure my SN says New Jersey. It would be interesting to consider the sources of the criticism levelled against the state here by knowing where the posters are from…but that information always seems to be missing from their signatures. Go Figure…

Hey, I live in Trenton, NJ, and it’s gotta be the best kept secret in America. I have a nice little semi-detached house with a garage across the street from a pretty little park for which I paid a whopping $56K four years ago. Yes, you read that correctly - $56K. Property taxes are a little high based on actual real estate prices, but moderate considering what the house is actually worth and the services you get (garbage pick-up twice a week, for example).

I am in train commuting distance of both NYC and Philadelphia, and driving distance of a number of high-tech areas such as Princeton, NJ and King of Prussia, PA. Salaries are normal for the northeast, and prices are normal - in fact, I haven’t seen anyplace with cheaper gas, AND it’s pumped for you. I am in easy reach of NYC, Philly, DC, the ocean, some pretty reasonable mountains, and a lot of lovely forest and farm land. Much of northern NY (although far less than when I grew up in Hunterdon County) is dairy farming. I get TV and radio from NY and Philly as a matter of course.

For salary/cost of living ratio, you simply can’t beat the Trenton, NJ area IF you are a skilled professional (I’m a programmer). I don’t know about others, and I do know rents aren’t nearly as comparatively low as purchase prices on real estate. The only downside (other than the fact that it’s a city, and some people don’t want a city period) is that the public schools don’t have a very good reputation (I’m childless, so not an issue for me). However, with real estate that inexpensive, I would think there would be plenty left over for one of the many Parochial or other private schools in the area if you were really concerned about that. Personally, I think what a kid gets out of school has far more to do with his upbringing than the so-called quality of the school, and so a well-motivated kid would get a good education at any school where the information was made available, but that’s a topic for a different thread.

Trenton’s no secret. There’s a whole series of best-selling mystery novels set in it, fer crying out loud.

Little-known fact: I’m actually a Jersey girl, although I’ve lived in the Chicago area since I was 2 years old. My family is mostly from central and south Jersey, and I have lots of lovely childhood memories of endless vacation days at the beach three blocks from my grandparents’ house in Margate, near Atlantic City.

There’s plenty to do for kids there. I really miss Atlantic City before the casinos came in, when it was an amusement park; my grandparents used to take us on the rides, especially the bumper cars. The frozen custard and saltwater taffy are more of my favorite childhood memories. Now you have to go to Ocean City for that. We also used to love digging up sand crabs and baby clams and mussels. By the end of vacation, we would be brown and utterly happy.

Plus the peaches and sweet corn and tomatoes can’t be beat; buy them from a roadside farmstand.

Oh, yeah, a fresh Jersey tomato! They do not “travel” well; you have to grow them in your backyard or buy them at a farm stand. The taste is incomparable, better even than fresh tomatoes in other states (IMHO). I’ve been told that even if you take a Jersey tomato seedling and plant it somewhere else, it won’t be the same. If all you’ve had are supermarket tomatoes you don’t know what you’re missing.

Eva, there are lots of other beaches that are like A.C. used to be before the casinos. I haven’t been there recently but someone else mentioned Wildwood as being really, really great. It’s also an incredibly wide beach. Apparently all the sand that erodes from elsewhere gets deposited at Wildwood. And for pure natural beach it doesn’t get much better than Island Beach State Park.

Wildwood’s beach is too wide. You need a train to get from the boardwalk to the water. Ocean City, though, is very nice and definitely family friendly. (It’s a dry town, too.)

Please show me where I said THE WHOLE STATE is arrogant and narcissistic and get back to me. I can be reached at the mental ward. If you care to read the thread again once your lather is down, you’ll see that I said I’ve met 20 people who acted that way. You’ll also see that I included YMMV and a Smiley because I knew I was not speaking about every New Jersian, everywhere. Funny how you missed that.

Oh, and congratulations that your location says New Jersey. I have my own reasons for not including that personal info under my location, but in the interest of satsfying whatever point you’re trying to make about that, <?>, I live in San Francisco. And so do the 20 pricks I know that are originally from Jersey.

And cuauhtemoc, I’ve already stated, three times now, that I didn’t judge people based on their hockey fans, but based on my personal experiences with people I have met. However, it’s shortsigted not to think that the behavior of stupid fans reflects negatively on your State. Ask people from Philadelphia about that.

The OP was “why does it have a bad reputation” - I offered my experiences. I recognize you’re not all like that, I was simply trying to contribute to the OP. Your cheery disposition has really made me see past those bad apples, though.
