Widow's Bay -- new series on Apple TV

Quite impressive how they managed to do the Halloween/Friday the 13th unstoppable-slow-moving-killer trope and have it work and be scary while also very subtly funny.

Kate O’Flynn’s (Patricia) physical acting is so great. She sort of stomps everywhere she goes, swaying her hair side to side.

Patricia is the GOAT and has great cardio.

I just watched the one where mayor accidentally took a mushroom drink.

His secretary putting him on a dog leash was hilarious. The episode wasn’t the best overall, but it was amusing to see him black out and come back over and over.

My love for Patricia grows every episode.

Also, the mayor’s kid (ethan? evan?) would have been mad about anything short of full disclosure, but I don’t know why he had to lie. “After giving birth, she had some complications and passed two years later” would have been a reasonable enough story to tell his whole life. Plus a bonus of being true, while shielding him from the scorpions-in-the-ears kind of stuff.

Patricia being in every scene after she has shot the supernatural serial killer, pointing the gun point blank at his head until the body is loaded into the furnace. And when the doors swing open POV from inside she is STILL THERE with gun raised. Only when she finally sees he has been cremated to ash does she fjnally lower the gun. She knows how this works. She is taking no chances.

Just finished the 8th and latest episode. I love that she pointed the shotgun at the slasher-killer until his ashes were fully ashes.

I half-expected to see the ashes tingle or shift at the end, indicating he’s still in there.

Can Rosemary be the new host of Finding Your Roots?

“Dead baby, dead baby, lesbian.”

Season 2 hook!

This show knows just how to frame a joke. Doesn’t sound funny until you see the episode.

So, they gonna kill the old lady in the next one? Hmm…

I’m excited for season finale tomorrow.

The show is very difficult to predict and I was thinking that Loftis’ son Evan was going to be the last living descendant. I can’t imagine they’ll go thru with the implied murder but maybe it’ll ramp up to a deeper eldritch mystery. Already confirmed for a season 2 renewal!

Anyone else got any predictions?

I only posted the prediction because I thought it was wrong. But I thought it had a strong ending and curious to see where S2 takes us.

I loved the show. Best and most creative new show that I’ve seen in a long time.

So it’s confirmed that Evan is a Warren descendant, and a secret cabal of islanders has been sacrificing people for centuries to sate the island entity. It appears like that cabal died out, or the priest’s suicide ended understanding of the tradition, or both.

Wasn’t clear if Ruth survived being shot.

Can’t wait for the next season!

Here’s my assessment.

According to the film reel Dale was watching, the rule seemed to be that however many chimes the bell tolls (I haven’t checked, but presumably it rang earlier in the season), that number of people must be sacrificed to appease the evil. The implication was that after Ruth died and Kenny was dragged away through the tunnels, they completed that curse, the storm ended, and the tourists could go home.

But then the final scene was a new set of bells tolling eight, which means another eight people will die in season 2.

I’m pretty sure it rang nine times early in the season. I don’t think Ruth counted as a sacrifice - either she’s not dead or she wasn’t put in the sacrifice chamber. But poor Kenny definitely qualified.

It rang nine times earlier, then after Kenny was sacrificed, the storm ended and it rang eight. My reading is that the eldritch horror under the island was getting more and more angry that no one was feeding it, so it kept making things worse until finally it was appeased by the first sacrifice. Now it’s just waiting for the next eight or else things will get bad again.

I liked the show and had a fun time watching it, but I was disappointed with the genealogy angle. There’s no way that the genealogical record is 100% perfect. There’s no way that no one had an affair. There’s no way that Ruth is the only one in that lineage who had a secret child. There’s no way that Ethan is the only unaccounted for descendant. I liked that Tom was put into a difficult moral quandary, but I wish the writers found a more believable way to make that happen.

It could be the nature of the curse that the bloodline isn’t allowed to spread too wide. Lots of unnatural deaths in that chain.

What I’m curious about for Season 2 is if they’ll keep up the mystery angle now that the cat is out of the bag for a few characters. Will it just be open knowledge on the island or will they keep it a secret…? I also had hoped they did another perspective of his mushroom trip, as to see what had really happened.

Apparently it was created by the same woman who had written for Parks and Rec. Katie Dippold - Wikipedia

Old small towns do keep records of stuff like that. Especially ones that pride themselves in their own history. But I get that it felt sorta contrived.
