Widows buried alive by Taliban: news story or propaganda?

Please note: I just want to know the truth, preferably with a reliable reference. In no way am I suggesting that the Taliban has not created a human rights disaster.

I have heard this several times, particularly in the widespread article penned by an Afghan-American, but I cannot find any support for it in any mainstream news organization. I have found some scant reference that this is an established punishment for some crimes, but nothing answering my question.

I will not ask this question without pointing out some factual accounts of the inhumane treatment that I know the Taliban endorses. This article is titled Burried Alive, and recounts the deplorable treatment of women including widows, but no literal burying alive. Here is another article detailing their plight.

Even if they don’t bury women alive, the things they do do are terrible anyways. How could a human do that to another human? How could a human watch like it wasa sport. Yuck. I think I am going to be sick.:frowning:

I haven’t read anything specifically related to burying widows alive, but there is a lot of info here:RAWA. This website is quite disturbing, I hope posting this link here is OK. if there is any truth to what you are asking about, it is probably here.

Here is the article that I believe propagated the belief: An Afghan American speaks. Most people will have seen it before. The idea of burying innocent people alive seemed too horrible to be true, but why stretch the truth to vilify a group that has so many human rights violations already documented? I wasn’t sure there was an easy answer to this question, that is why I didn’t just place it in GQ, but I didn’t think it was worthy of a GD either. Anyone have any ideas? Surely if this were documented it would be widely disseminated.

I don’t know about actually burying people alive in the ground, or anything like that, but I was under the impression that the Taliban oppressed woman - no education, no rights - which could be described as being buried alive.

Not sure about burying them alive, but I saw footage on CBS of a woman being dragged into the street and shot through the back of the head with an AK-47.

I find it hard to believe women/widows living under the Taliban regime are being buried alive in graves of dirt. The articles cited note the increase of women beggars, specifically noting that some of them are widows without husbands to support them.
I think the words “buried alive” are just metaphor about women being “buried” in their houses or under clothing because they cannot be seen by men.
I would find it hard to believe that in a country that needs a substantial population to fight a war the government would allow the mass slaughter of women. It just does not make sense.

There is no need to exaggerate the atrocities of the Taliban regime. What they are doing is mind-numbingly horrendous enough.
