I’ve been there. And let me tell you, captioning those pictures in my scrapbook sucked.
I live near Kalamazoo, MI.
Then there’s:
Purgatory
Hell
Ypsilanti
Paw Paw
Colon
Mackinaw (I think the bridge is spelled Mackinac or somesuch, and the city Mackinaw, IIRC. Pronounced the same)
Then I know Waxahachi, TX. And Pflugerville.
How about:
Hardup, Utah
Virgin, Utah
…too bad these towns are at opposite ends of the state, maybe things could have worked out for the better if they had been a bit closer.
A few from England:
Land of Nodand Crackpot, both in Yorkshire.
Foul Mile, West Sussex.
Pity Me, County Durham.
Thong Lane, Gravesend. Google also turns up ‘Thong Enterprises’ and ‘Thong Estate Agents’ in the same town.
In Oklahoma, we have
**Broken Bow
Broken Arrow**
(not much fight’n gets done that way)
We also have Nowatta, in a dry county no less.
We also have the ability to create a sentence out of nothing but Oklahoma town names: Sallisaw Henrietta Wagonner Catoosa.*
*Sally saw Henrietta waggin’ her catoosa.
In Georgia we have a:
Between (I have to explain this to a lot of people when I tell them my friend lives in Between)
Climax
Flovilla
Santa Claus
Thunderbolt
There’s a county named Taliaferro, funny only because it’s pronounced “Tolliver.”
Over here, in New Hampshire, we have the lovely town of Dummer. It’s named after an old state governor, but one could also argue that perhaps, they just didn’t know how to spell it correctly.
We also have a town named Four Corners, which didn’t amuse me much 'til I found out that north of that and a bit to the east is a Five Corners, NH. If I look long enough, I may find the other corners, but I don’t know for sure. Then there’s Dingit Corner – I expect to find a dent there. (This state of mine is very fond of towns with the word “corner” in the name, it seems.)
Did anyone mention Bald Knob, AR yet?
Actually, Natchitoches isn’t unpronounceable at all – it just doesn’t look anything like the way it’s said. “Nack-a-dish.” Seriously. As in ‘snack’. My brother went to school there for a year, so I have firsthand knowledge.
There is a Pasadena, Newfoundland. I find this amusing only because, well, Pasadena??? I lived in SoCal for four years. I do not associate Pasadena with anywhere near Canada.
