Wierd dreams...

Occasionally I have some pretty strange ones. Here are a few samples:

<DL><DT>“It’s coming through the window!”
<DD>One recurring dream used to be where I was in my bedroom laying on my back in bed (it was always my current bedroom, not the same one every time). The foot of the bed faced the window, and a sudden gust of wind would blow the windows open. The curtains would stream into the room from the window, while outside it was dark, with debris from the wind blowing about.

<DD>I’m not certain why, but the above dream terrified me. I’d wake up immediately and try to scream, but my body wans’t awake yet, so it took a few seconds before I could make a sound. By the time I was fully awake, I was too scared to utter a sound.

<DD>The last time I had that dream I wasn’t as frightened and walked over to the window to look outside and see what was going on. I had those dreams starting at age 4 until I was 22. I had the last dream of that type when I was stationed in Germany, during my first enlistment in the Air Force.

<DT>“Excuse me, sir, but there appears to have been a mistake!”
<DD>I had this dream only once, but I can’t figure out if it was a nightmare or not. When I tried to tell someone else about it, even I had to laugh. I was getting ready to re-enlist for the first time, and in the dream the paperwork had been screwed up and I was sent to Marine basic training. I kept telling them I was supposed to be in the Air Force, but they kept ignoring me.

<DT>“Jesus, is that you?”
<DD>I had this dream only once, shortly after I arrived at my present location, in the western edge of tornado country. In the dream there was a huge storm outside, so I went to the door to watch. It was one of those storms where the cloud-to-cloud lightning was so rapid, it lit up the sky continuously. The main cloud was due east, and looked more like a column of smoke with flames shooting up inside it to a height of several thousand feet.

<DD>A beam of light speared out from the main cloud and began sweeping about, as if it were searching. It swept around swiftly, until it was pointing straight at my face, blinding me. I asked aloud “Jesus, is that you?” and immediately felt as if I had been caught up towards the light.

<DD>That’s when I woke up.

<DT>“It worked just a minute ago!”
<DD>I had this dream only once. In it, I was walking through a wrecking yard, and discovered that I had the power of telekinesis. As I picked things up with the power of my mind, I could feel something “flexing” in the back of my skull whenever I exerted the power.

<DD>The dream was so convincing that when I woke up I spent 20 minutes staring at a bic lighter, willing it to move. It didn’t budge, so eventually I went and had breakfast instead.

<DD>Even if you think you know the secret of the universe, you’re probably wrong.</DL>

There are more, but I’d like to give others a chance to share their dreams or analyze these.

Computers have let mankind make mistakes faster than any other invention, with the possible exception of tequila and handguns.

I’ve been writing down my dreams in my online Dream Journal (which is searchable!) for almost a year and a half now… if anyone enjoys reading dreams!

The other night I had one that was pretty weird though! ( http://fathom.org/opalcat/dreams/121499.html )

Here is an excerpt:

*… there was the being that was my mother. I was some sort of
being, not human. My mother was a much older being. She roamed
the earth before there were animals. She was the fungus-eater. The
only life on earth was fungus, and her. She floated around, not
walking, with a long draping cloak, hooded, with a sort of
open-mouthed facial posture that didn’t change much. I know that I
considered some of the psychology of being the only one of your
kind, with no peers, and no one to see or care what you did, and
thinking that she wasn’t really scary looking, since there was no
one to scare. She was sort of bluish-green…

She had come back now to find me to tell me my destiny. She
appeared with a shadow that was like a splashing wave of black
that followed her wherever she went, and she could materialize
from the earth. She finally confronted me, and told me that I had to
make a bridge between her world (the past) and this one (the
present) by going to some place (time?) and merging with some sort
of plant… sort of like a sexual union, but not really, but I would
forever be bound to this one place, as a new entity combined with
this plant (which represented the fungus world, I guess) … anyway
there was fear but also acceptance, and then I saw myself
combined with the plant, and I was much older, with short grey
hair, and I looked very earthy and I had the impression that I was
sort of on a lesbian vibe… it was very odd. I was at peace though,
and seeing that helped with the acceptance…*

I keep on having this dream where I am in an open field in the middle of the night and suddenly the whole field begins to tilt. I grab onto the ground while the field turns into a wall. I try to climb up, but instead find myself slipping down faster and faster. And that’s when I ususally wake up. I made a painting based on this dream, I wish I could scan it so all of you can see it.

I have a kind-of recurring dream. It’s always different, but the end is the same. No matter what happens in the dream itself, at the end my front teeth somehow end up getting knocked out. It’s never really a nightmare, just weird and realistic enough that I wake up and check to make sure I still have 'em.

That sounds vaguely like a recurrent dream I used to have. When I first started wearing glasses at age 13, I had dreams where, although the settings differed, I would suddenly realize I was going blind. By the end of the dream, I could not see at all. When I awoke, I immediately realized it was only a dream, but I continued having these dreams for many years.

The last time I had that dream, the ending was slightly different. My friends and I were walking along some railroad tracks when I suddenly realized I was going blind. I was worried that if a train came along, I wouldn’t see it and would be hit.

My friends (in the dream, of course) asked me if something was wrong, and I told them I was going blind. They said “Don’t worry about it. We’ll guide you.”

I never had that dream again.

Every so often I have dreams which seem extremely familiar; while I’m having them I will think, “Oh, I’ve had this dream before,” and it would proceed exactly how I expect (“remember”) it to.

Then when I wake up, I can’t be sure whether the dream actually WAS a recurring dream or else that was the only time I had that dream.

“I’m just too much for human existence – I should be animated.”
–Wayne Knight

I had a dream in the summer of '95, which became even more bizarre as my real day wore on.

In the dream, I was joined by many other people, and we were outrunning nuclear disaster. We all knew that the end was near, and thousands of people were running for their lives.
Suddenly, there was an incredibly bright surge of light, I looked up towards the sky and could see Mount Rushmore. (Never been there in real life) As I looked upon the faces, they turned from the faces of dead presidents into skulls. At this point I woke up.

Later in the day, I was riding my bike into town (about 2.5 mi) at a leisurely pace, when I rode past something in the grass at the side of the road. I glimpsed an American flag and a face.

Not usually being one to stop and pick up shit I see in the road, I surprised myself by turning around to get a closer look at what I had seen. It was a t-shirt, with a picture of Mount Rushmore on it. It said, “1941-1991 50th anniversary Mount Rushmore”. It gave me such an eerie feeling of déjà-vu, and I had to stuff the shirt into my back pack. I went to the craft store later, and bought some black and some white fabric paint, and, after laundering the shirt when I got home, I painted it so that the faces of the presidents looked like skulls. I still have the shirt, although I don’t wear it much anymore (people used to ask if it was a Dead shirt)

That’s not my weirdest dream, just the weirdest dream followed by waking experience sequence.

I once dreamed I was on pluto(the planet, not poster).I was lonely cause no one else was there.
My mum once dreamed she was walking down the sidewalk, and got a ticket for going thru a red light(on the sidewalk)

I have weird dreams about people who write “wierd”.

I remember a dream I used to have a lot when I was around 5 or 6 years old, I think. My brother and I would be talking about this statue of a woman that was in my room (There was no statue in my actual room, by the way). Suddenly, he would jump through the wall, and the statue would animate into an actual woman and start beating me up! I would wake up shortly after.

I also had some weird dreams when I was about 11 or so. I would be playing on my Nintendo or computer and it would do something it wasn’t supposed to do, i.e. talking to me. I’d try to turn it off, but it would do everything to stop me, one time even seeming to switch off gravity around me and I would almost float away. I would wake up when I succeed in turning the thing off.

“War doesn’t determine who’s right. War determines who’s left.”

I’ve had lots of weird dreams. All my dreams are weird, but a few in particular are especially weird. They’re so weird I won’t even write about them here, because they wouldn’t make sense to anyone. (Plus I don’t remember a lot of them with much detail.)
One thing I will talk about, though…a lot of times, I’ll be in a dream, and in the dream, I’ll realize I’m in a dream. Then I put all of my effort into trying to wake up. And it’s hard. And sometimes, in the dream, I’ll think I’ve woken up, only to discover that I’m still in the dream, and I must attempt to wake up again. It’s very frustrating. It gives me a feeling like I want to cry almost.
Anyway, eventually I get my eyes open. Then, for awhile, all I can do is stare. Stare at whatever room I’m in, and attempt to wake up. But I can’t. Something in my brain is telling my body not to move, and try as I might, I’m basically paralyzed. (I think there was a Straight Dope article about the hormone that controls this.) Eventually, I wake up, and everything is ok, but while I’m in that paralyzed state, it’s…really freaky.
And what’s even more odd is that when I’m awake, I tell myself “Okay, don’t wake up next time. Next time, since you’re in a dream, and you know it’s a dream, just stay in the dream and screw around. See what you can do. Make the sky turn green, make naked women appear everywhere, you’re omnipotent. Don’t try to wake up.”
But then I have the same situation, where I’ll be aware that I’m dreaming, and that kind of concious thought does not exist. I forget everything about what I tell myself when I’m awake, and I put all my effort into trying to wake up, which inevitably just makes me frustrated. It’s a weird feeling, and it’s hard to describe. Has anyone else experienced anything weird like this? Or is it just me?

Valerieblaise:

I too occasionally have ‘teeth dreams’… I think it’s caused by grinding my teeth while sleeping, but my dream self sort of gets lockjaw, and it feels like I’m clenching my jaw ever harder, and my lower jaw is off to the side (teeth not lined up). I ‘have to’ straighten my teeth but I have to loosen my jaw to do so, and I always feel my teeth shatter a bit, like the tips of my canines were breaking.

It all started after I lost a cap on my tooth, and because the tooth was broken across half the back of my top front tooth, without the cap, it felt like my whole tooth was missing, a huge hole. This really bugged me, and I think that explained the dreeams of breaking teeth. After I had the cap replaced the dreams came less often, and it’s been a year or so since I’ve had one. Very odd.
Other dreams.

I occasionally wake up, yet am paralyzed, and can’t move, and sometimes feel like I can’t breathe. Not sure if I’m actually awake, or just dreaming I’m awake. It’s really creepy.
My scariest dreams were when I was younger, I’d had a story about a kid who dug up artifacts at an indian burial ground read to me. The final scene is him in the basement, where he’s stored the stuff. He’s got a flashlight, and hears a noise, he turns to look and sees something crawling towards him. He starts toward the stairs in fear, trips over a box, and drop the light, which goes out. The rest is fairly predictable… he can’t find the light, or the stairs. I think he started to hear it talk, and the noise got louder. It reached him, the end. Nothing happened in the story, it just ended. But my nightmares filled in any blanks…

Other than this, I have the standard, running in quicksand type of dreams, where I have to get something done and can’t, nothing works right, I can’t do even simple tasks, etc. Sometimes it’s just frustrating, like being at work and unable to do anything, sometimes it’s frightening because I’m trying to prepare for/avoid something bad, and it keeps getting closer.

Other than that, I’m fairly nightmare free…
