Wikipedia Closing in on One Million Articles

It looks like the english version of Wikipedia should exceed one million articles very soon, maybe even some time today. When I was just there it was at 999,292. Kind of like watching the odometer on your car turnover. Isn’t that exciting! (OK, even a teeny bit?) It doesn’t appear to be of any hoopla over at Wikipedia? What wil the one-millionth article be? Some random album from some non-descript band? A thirteenth century mayor of a small German village? Or will it be a vanity page that is speedy deleted? The world waits with bated breath.

Here’s the most up-to-the-minute stats

I think, based on past observation, that they don’t like to pre-publicize these milestones. They probably feel that that would encourage people to try to “game” the system to hit the mark. But they usually publicize it after the fact.

…and one million it is. Press release.

Good catch and yes I am excited. When I started using Wikipedia it had around 250,000 and it seems like half of then were the Public Domain Britanica Articles.

This is cool. Happy 1,000,000[sup]th[/sup] Wikipedia English version.

Jordanhill must be very proud.

Does that mean I don’t need to write that article on History of Dishcloths in the Sunspace Household, then?
