One Bobby Phils was driving his Porsche down a major public highway. Bobby just happened to, at the time, be a player in the NBA - a Charlotte Hornet. While racing his teammate (also in a Porsche, my how shocking) he wrecks almost taking two other people with him (they are only injured). Phils dies in the wreck he caused. So . . . he is now a hero. A “great man in the community”. He had his jersey retired in a very emotional ceremony. He was such a great guy. So many will miss him. The Hornets go on to win an emotional victory and say it is in “Bobby’s honor”.
John Rocker says some words. They are the wrong words, He insults and offends people with his views. (I do not agree with what he said.) He is persecuted and ridiculed. He gets suspended for (2 months) 1/5th of his sports season, baseball (duh). Now the Braves are trying to trade Rocker.

Well, I have more faith in the MPSIMS folk. However I shall go and read what you are talking about, because great guy or not . . . I find it hard to believe that the intelligent folk as Dopers are, can excuse the truth so easily. Perhap I am naive, we shall see.
His death may have been stupid, but it is still tragic. to see someone you admire die makes you focus on the good things about their life. What are people supposed to say?
I can understand your point though, Its sad that they have to wait until after they die before they call him a hero.

Wow , Walter Payton pasing on was something that truly upset me. He was class, on the field and off. Maybe I am being misunderstood, I am not talking about greats of the past that have moved on. I am talking about why one man almost kills two other people , and one just is an idiot, yet the man who died is hailed as a hero and rewarded, and the man who uses his mouth too much is punished. I noticed no one has showed up to defend Alomar.
I do see your point, but I think that its just a matter of it being pointless to discipline or punish a dead guy.
Although, an arguement can be made to somehow reprimand his actions as a role-model. It is possible that children may see how he was made out to be a hero after the accident, and get the unfortunate idea that street-racing is cool.
