I don’t think most people actually know that, however. I never even recall hearing it before the rightwingers started using it as an insult.
You may have seen that the Miami city government has unilateraly decided to postpone elections, giving the current mayor an extra year in office. This is probably not legal and there have already been lawsuits, but I expect to see more of this at the local level and definitely at the federal level in 2028. By “this” I mean some fig leaf (martial law, war with Greenland or California, invasion by Mexican construction workers, whatever) to delay or cancel elections so Trump or his desiccated corpse or JD Vance can remain in office “temporarily”. We should all be well past the point of saying “they can’t do that” or “they wouldn’t try that”. It’s obvious by now that they would.
The odds are good for a Dem House in 2026, and not terrible for the senate.
“Both parties are the same” is heavily pushed by the kremlin.
The opening narration of The Croods captures that exactly.
Moving municipal elections to even numbered years is an idea with merit. But the correct thing to do in Miami would have been to reschedule the ensuing election, not the impending one.
Republicans are indeed testing the limits of voters’ willingness to accept more self-serving corruption. I don’t think we’ve seen anywhere near the worst of it yet.
I don’t think it’s possible for Democrats to transition away from woke ideology. The Democrats could run Mitt Romney for President and he would instantly be called the most extreme leftist, communist, woke, candidate the party has ever chosen.
It truly doesn’t matter who it is, they are going to be tagged with that identity regardless. I heard MAGA people local to me last election saying Joe Biden was a socialist, but Harris was just a straight up communist.
^Correct.
That is fair, but the flip side of that is that we shouldn’t assume compliance with whatever the fascists decide to do either. Further, we’ve seen Trump back down again and again on a bunch of stuff: tariffs, Abrego Garcia, etc.
I personally think the country is a powder keg onto which the fascists keep tossing lit matches. If they make a wrong move or a move too far, we will have a revolution that sweeps away all the bullshit.
Yeah. but that term needs to be dropped, as well as “defund the police”.
“Woke” won’t recede from the political lexicon just because the left and the Ds quit using it.
It will persist undiminished as long as it reliably elicits a rousing “Fuck Yeah!!!” from the MAGAt deplorables and their country-club R backers. Faux et al will see to that.
He hasn’t totally backed down, only partially. There are still tariffs in place, still doing real damage to the US and foreign economies. Ábrego García is still in jail lest he be deported (or, at least, that’s what his lawyers are asking), which is a far cry from being free to live life with your family. In a way, that’s worse, because in addition to being evil it’s also random and harder to work around.
Well, of course. Just like I dont remember any leading Dems seriously suggesting “Defund the Police”, it is a MAGA bug-a-boo. (The ACLU didnt like “defund the police”, they suggested “divest and reinvest” i.e. take some police funding and use it for helping people on drugs, the mentally ill, etc. )
Correct. It’s really the worst of all worlds, both for us the people and for him.
We the people get to endure the meaningless and unpleasant chaos that Trump constantly creates.
But for Trump, it’s also bad. He doesn’t look like a strong leader, and his opponents (we) know that he can be manipulated and influenced.
My larger point being that throughout the 110+ posts I keep hearing people say in effect “We (the Ds) must adopt policies and platforms and terminology to which the Right won’t object.”
Which is a fool’s errand. It doesn’t matter what policy or words the Left adopts. The RW propaganda machine will pick (or invent) something to tease them about and their audience will give them a standing ovation for that.
Stopping the propaganda is a prerequisite for switching away from sports fan team t-shirtism and restarting politics.
^Agreed.
True, I concur.
And in many ways the Democrats have already run to the right to try and copy GOP policies. Kamala picking up DJT’s “No Tax On Tips” bullshit is just the first one that comes to mind.
They’ve been doing that for years. It never works, but they keep trying no matter how much it alienates their base and how indifferent or hostile the rightwingers they are courting are.
That’s not a great example. Yes, it was bullshit when trump said it. And almost impossible to administratively implement honestly.
OTOH, it’s exactly the sort of policy aimed at benefiting the low-wage worker that a genuinely lefty worker-friendly party could / should / would go after. Getting more, or all, of the tax burden off the working poor would be a great way to make them the working less-poor.
No, it’s not. It’s a nod and a wink to the idea that person-to-person transactions aren’t income and don’t count.
There are fifty thousand ways to make servers’ lives easier, starting with insisting on the same base salary as non-tipped workers.
