Will Biden Exclude Trump from the Presidential Inauguration?

Hillary was not the outgoing president, so the circumstances are not the same.

The President needs to have a specific invitation to enter either chamber of Congress (like a vampire). Pelosi and - either Pence or Harris depending on which side of noon we are talking about - probably have the authority to keep Trump off Capitol property.

This makes me curious about how many vampire rules we have in Federal law. Maybe something about sunlight or garlic, though holy water might run afoul of the Establishment Clause.

Hillary Clinton is the wife on an ex-President and convention dictated that she attend the 2017 inauguration even though she didn’t want to. She was effectively forced to attend, even if the bindings of convention were less physical than the ones proposed by Running Coach for Trump.

BTW, the question is whether Biden will try to keep Trump from attending the 2021 inauguration. Anyone want to discuss that?

Why should Biden care? He should act as if he has no interest in Trump’s whereabouts on January 20 or any time after.

Also, Trump had threatened (repeatedly) to jail her just for being a political opponent.
That kinda puts a damper on social obligations.

  1. I doubt Biden actually wants to be in Trump’s presence. If Trump wasn’t still going on about having won the election, Biden would probably want to take the high road and have Trump involved in the inauguration. Now, after all Trump’s antics, is there any low road for Biden?

  2. It seems like a lot of Washington DC is trying to get as far away from Trump as possible. Biden might find value in encouraging that trend.

  3. A public rejection of Trump would appeal to the Democratic hard-left, and Biden will need to keep himself in their favour if he goes forward with a centre-left agenda.

Incidentally, it’s a very stupid limitation of the board software that the “replying to” feature doesn’t work when responding to the most recent comment.

I think more importantly, Biden should not give Trump an opportunity to look presidential and start building his revisionist history. It’s actually important at this point that we don’t blindly follow norms simply as the path of least resistance.

Once you have the quote in the reply box, alter it in some minor way. That preserves the entire quote. I typically use a hyphen at the end of the quote as you can see in your post I quoted.

Frankly, if the Secret Service says “We’re doing this in a secure location with Biden, Roberts, and one pool camera” would anyone really try to buck them?

Jeez. I just flashed on dozens of tweets from Trump boasting about how many more people came to HIS inauguration than Biden’s…

That’s a good tip, but I’m trying to get into the habit of not unnecessarily quoting text when replying to people since the software does a decent job of keeping context on it’s own in most other cases. When responding to the immediately prior comment quoting the text is most egregious and where the simple “replying to” should be most useful.

Can you imagine the reaction if they said something like this to Trump if he had won?

Oh, I’d think the scenario where Donny the Loser watches as Joe the Winner officially becomes president would be mighty tempting for Biden. Cue Nelson Muntz’s “Ha-ha!”

No need to.

That’s the first Trump tweet I ever wanted to “like”.
Wait! When did he get his Twitter privileges back?

After he agreed to do his hostage video.

Trump’s tweet seems to have a ring that he is having and accepting he has mental health issues and is going to get help. Let’s hope.

I think it would be marvy if the CFSG were – uh – ‘coaxed’ into attending and watching the Inauguration:
