Will China allow recreational SCUBA diving on the Three Gorges reservoir?

Just watched a documentary about the construction of the Three Gorges dam in China. Terribly sad to see all these ancient villages uprooted and cultures destroyed, but at the same time the frequent destruction from the unmitigated flooding of the river is too much to bear, and the dam pretty much had to be built.

In some cases, moderately-sized cities with multi-story buildings are now submerged by the water that has been impounded behind the dam. Assuming some of these are at a reasonable depth (<100 feet below the surface), will China allow recreational SCUBA divers to visit these sites? This seems like an interesting dive opportunity for visitors, and possibly a commercial opportunity for the locals.

Don’t do it! Haven’t you read World War Z?

Seriously, I thought they demolished the buildings that were to be covered by the reservoir.

I opened this threat to post this.

I’m not sure if scuba diving is even allowed in China. When I packed up my house, scuba equipment of any kind was on the forbidden-by-China list. I’ll see if they’ve confiscated my snorkeling gear if my container ever shows up. (Piano’s are on the list, too, so I’ll see if I own one less synthesizer keyboard, too.)

All the same, I was looking at Three Gorges websites yesterday for a future planned visit. If scuba is legal, I’m going to add this to my list (even though I’m only open-water cert’d.).
