Will downloading music ruin my computer?

My parents both insist that downloading music illegally will somehow mess up my computer. My mom says that downloading music lets spyware in, while my dad just makes vague insinuations that make me feel like its going to make my computer explode or something. :dubious: Neither of them have backed up their claims with any real information, but they’ve got me worried. Is there any truth in what they’re saying?

The mods don’t like discussion of this sort, but I will go so far as to say it depends what method you choose. Some methods will allow spyware into your computer. Other methods are much safer. I suggest you investigate the methods off these boards.

It’s estimated that 6% of what’s available via KaZaA is really viruses disgused as music files. You’re better off with getting your music through iTunes for 99¢ per song.

It’s against SDMB rules to assist you in doing anything illegal. Aside from that there is truth in what your parents say as unkown downloads and applications you’ll need for illegal sharing sites often contain spyware and other more malicious code. Furthermore there is often prosecution of people who engage in illegal file sharing of copyrighted materials. I’m presuming that you are a minor so that can make your parents liable for some hefty civil suits and fines. Do yourself and them a favor and pay for the music you want instead of stealing it.

We don’t permit questions about how best to illegally download music or other copyright-protected materials, how to get away with it, how to avoid having your computer ruined when you do it, or pretty much anything else about it. This thread is closed.
