Will Employers Leave messages on an answering machine

I’ve applied for work at a number of places (slob work, not anything special), and I’ve had one bite (employer called while I was at home).

I have an answering maching (it says “Hi My Name is QOFM, please leave your message . . .”). I would have expected more than one call, but there are no messages on the machine (it does work).

So the Question: As a rule, will employers leave messages on answering machines?

A side question about the one bite: Is it normal to have to pass three interviews to stock shelves? Last time I worked, it was fast food, and they told me I got the job after an interview that just confirmed that yes I could read, yes I was articulate, and yes I was clean cut. I’m trying to get a job at Staples (ie away from fast food), and the first interview I find out that there are two more for me to go through. Is this normal?

Thanks

Yes, an employer will leave a message if the answering machine has a normal message such as you describe. (Jokey type outgoing messages are a no-no.) It’s totally normal for someone to not be sitting by the phone waiting for a call.

Don’t know about how many interviews you’d need to work at Staples – but if that’s where you want to work, it doesn’t seem like a problem to me.

Yes, they are accustomed to leaving messages.

Also, I don’t know about this kind of job, but sometimes they want to conduct a screening interview on the phone, to weed out the obvious bad matches, so be prepared.

When I was a manager who hired, I always left messages asking them to call me.
