He does so much “crap” because a kajillion people pay money to watch him in that “crap” and then leave happy and thinking it was funny.
You might not like it but that’s not because all those other people were wrong, you just didn’t like it.

We have the same sense of humor, and I only find Will Ferrell funny in the cheerleader skits on SNL. For some reason I think those are hilarious.
I’m not a fan of Jim Carrey, but loved him in The Truman Show. Same with Bill Murray - loved him in just two films, Groundhog Day and What About Bob.
I want to laugh at Ben Stiller - I keep thinking he could be a comic genius if he just found the right script. IMO the writing always fails him, even when it’s his own.
Did you see Tropic Thunder?
If you think more than 1/10 (which is probably overestimating it) of actors think that, rather than ‘the bad films pay the bills, full stop’, or Nic Cage-ish ‘the bad films pay the bills, and are straight up fun to do’, you don’t know much about actors. Very few are in it to Make Good Movies. Most are in it to Make Money, doing something they enjoy doing.
No, but thanks for the suggestion - I will try to catch it on TV. I see that Robert Downey Jr and Jack Black are also in it. I don’t mind watching those two even if the movie sucks.
Or the Christopher Walken “I’m an actor, that’s my job. If you pay me to act in your movie, I’ll do it” perspective. Good or bad doesn’t enter into it any more than a house painter being asked to paint a house an ugly color. It’s a job and you give it your best with whatever you have to work with.
Michael Caine is the epitome of the working actor’s attitude, IMO. The man will appear in anything if he has the time and there is a paycheck, and by Og he will deliver the best performance he can every time.
Downey was brilliant in Tropic Thunder. He plays a blond Australian actor playing a black actor. He was nominated for practically every award there is for it.
Here’s a little taste, 51 seconds, of Downey in it.
Two words: More Cowbell!

Oh, I cannot wait to see this movie!! Thanks!
It is a routine mistake to think that just because something is popular that it isn’t crap. And I do not mean from my perspective, but from the perspective of the people who knowingly buy the crap.
The Tyler Perry Madea film goers know perfectly well these are terrible films. It’s a social experience.
McDonalds is the most popular restaurant in the world, but the customers know perfectly well they are getting far from the best food in the world.
A lot of people go to films they know are bad because of the whole silliness of it and to be part of a pop culture thing.
Did anybody really expect Snakes On a Plane to be a good film???
Ok, but none of those apply to Will Ferrell’s stuff. Unless you have some evidence that everyone was seeing Talladega Nights to be part of some greater social experience based on irony or culture, there’s no point in bringing up Snakes On A Plane or Medea. People go to McDonald’s because it provides acceptable food for a low price but movies aren’t priced that way. No one in this thread who says they like the films says that they’re really terrible. All evidence points to people seeing the films because they legitimately and sincerely like the humor even if you don’t.
Judge me if you will but I find plenty of Will Ferrell films hilarious. His schtick of playing the clueless moron in different ways is entertaining to me.
The innocent clueless moron in Elf, the juvenile manchild clueless moron in Stepbrothers, the asshole figure skater / anchorman / nascar driver who are all clueless morons, etc.
I guess some people see this, it hits a little close to home, and they think “gah, I HATE people like that! That makes me mad, not funny!”
Instead I see the humour in the people reacting to him since it’s relateable. The whole “OMG, can you believe this guy?” And him at the same time seeing how far he can push people’s buttons.
Um, no? My sister unironically thinks the Madea character is a hoot. Personally, I liked her better in Perry’s plays, but she’s still not bad.
Also, McDonald’s fries and nuggets are awesome, much better than the more expensive versions.
The scary thing about that movie is, Tom Cruise is even better.
Umm, McDonald’s fries aren’t as good as … McDonald’s fries. The original fries: fresh peeled and cut on site, fried in oil with beef fat and other flavorings were superior to the current frozen, vegetable oil only ones.
Not exactly the best argument there.
And nuggets? Good grief. All major chain chicken nuggets are total crap. Made from third rate “meat”. Did you mistype or something? The chicken poppers I can get at my local international market are vastly superior. And, in turn, not as good as what Mrs. FtG makes at home.
It’s been about 50 years since that was the case. I don’t put very much stock in a 50-year memory.
Seconded. His scenes worked wonderfully.
One data point on why studios keep greenlighting Will Ferrell movies: he has a better return on investment than some “A list” actors like Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks:
I cannot explain why I like some Will Ferrell stuff. It seems to defy logic. I hated Anchorman and Talledega Nights, couldn’t sit through them. Step Brothers, on the other hand, absolutely slays me. Kills me, I tell you. I liked Blades of Glory just fine too. Cannot tell you why one appeals and not the other. Script, maybe? Haven’t thought too much about it.
I think Step Brothers is seriously funny. Think your worst.
